The Wave enter the contest 5-19 overall, 3-9 in American action and looking to snap a five-match skid dating back to a straight-sets loss to Temple on Oct. 19. During Tulane's previous showdown with Houston, however, the Green Wave came away with a 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 victory back on Oct. 1 in Devlin Fieldhouse.
"We played well against them at home and won, and that's something we're going to try to repeat that and see how we match up," Tulane head coach Sinisa Momic said. "Obviously we want to improve on our performance from last weekend and we know what kind of volleyball Houston plays.
"They've got one exceptionally good outside hitter who leads the team and the conference in kills. In some points in our match at home, we were able to stop her a little bit and went on good runs on our side. For us, the main focus is still trying to play more stable volleyball and improve on what we can do to come away with a win."
As a team, Tulane is averaging 11.11 kills, 10.47 assists, 0.86 service aces, 14.34 digs and 2.14 blocks per set while hitting .154 after tallying 944 kills and 501 errors in 2,878 swings. Freshman Sarah Ray leads the Green Wave offense with 3.05 kills per set while sophomore Tea Juric is close behind with a 3.04 average.
Sophomore Ally Frank and Lauren Etta have split time at the setter position and have respective averages of 8.49 and 7.21 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore libero Miah Diirell paces the team with 4.10 digs per set while sophomore middle blocker Sarah Strasner headlines the front-row unit with 1.05 blocks per contest.
Houston, meanwhile, enters Wednesday's match 11-13 on the year, 3-9 in league play and looking to bounce back from back-to-back, straight-set losses to Tulsa and SMU last weekend. As a team, the Cougars are averaging 13.43 kills, 12.49 assists, 1.12 service aces, 15.49 digs and 1.76 blocks per set while posting a .222 attack percentage on the strength of 1,289 kills and 501 errors in 3,543 swings.
Kadi Kullerkann leads The American with 5.16 kills per stanza while Cortey Warren is second on the team at a 3.53 kills-per-set average. Keandra McCardell paces the squad with 10.70 assists per frame, Natalie Keck has a team-best 4.99 digs per contest and Kaiti Waters leads the defense with 0.81 blocks per set.
Wednesday's match marks the 39th meeting between Tulane and Houston on the hardwood, and the Cougars hold a 26-12 lead in the all-time series. The last two times the two teams met, however, the Green Wave came out on top as Tulane posted a four-set win on Oct, 21, 2012, prior to the early-season win against the Cougars.
Following the contest against Houston, Tulane continues the road swing on Nov. 9 when they play at East Carolina before squaring off against Cincinnati on Nov. 14 and Memphis on Nov. 16. The Green Wave's next home match is slated for Friday, Nov. 21, when they play host to UCF in Devlin Fieldhouse.
