Men's Basketball Falls at No. 13 Washington
Dec 23, 2014 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE - The Tulane men's basketball team's nine-game win streak was halted on Monday night by the 13th-ranked Washington Huskies, but the Green Wave did not let go of the streak without and fight, and fell, 66-57, at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Tulane (9-2) out-played Washington (11-0) in almost every statistical category, but could not overcome a poor shooting night. The Green Wave outrebounded the Huskies, 36-33, collected 10 steals and forced 18 turnovers, but shot just 31.7 percent (19-60) from the floor in the loss. Washington knocked down 52.1 percent (25-48) of its shots en route to its 11th straight win to open the season.
"No question that I'm proud of our guys," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "We showed everyone in this arena and that watched this game on television that this is a mentally and physically tough team. The toughness was tremendous to watch tonight. We forced them into 18 turnovers and outrebounded a team with an NBA frontline, but I'm disappointed. We left a lot of execution type things out there. We forced too many shots, but our aggressiveness was fun to watch."
Dylan Osetkowski led Tulane with a career-best 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench. The freshman's performance was complimented by an 11-point performance by senior Jay Hook and 10 points from sophomore Jonathan Stark. Junior Louis Dabney added seven points and six rebounds, while sophomore Payton Henson had seven rebounds and four assists.
Tulane scored the first points of the game on a lay-up by Ryan Smith. Washington scored the next nine to seemingly take control of the game, but the Green Wave proceeded to score 16 of the next 18 points, including a 10-0 run, to retake the lead, 18-11, with 11:28 remaining in the opening half. Hook knocked down a trio of three-pointers during the run to spark Tulane.
The Green Wave maintained the lead and retook another seven-point advantage after a three-pointer from Stark with 3:11 left in the half, but Washington scored the final nine points of the half to lead, 28-26, at the break.
The Huskies then scored seven of the first eight points to open the second half and took a, 35-27, advantage less than three minutes in. Tulane was able to claw away at the Washington lead to tie the game and eventually retook the lead, 46-43, after a Dabney three pointer with 8:53 left.
Washington tied it back up, 46-46, with a three-point play by Darin Johnson and the Huskies captured the lead for good after Robert Upshaw's two free throws with 7:40 left.
Shawn Kemp, Jr., led Washington with a game-high 16 points, while Nigel Williams-Goss added 14 points and nine assists. Upshaw collected a double-double off the bench for the Huskies with 11 points and 10 rebounds, complimented by six blocked shots.
Tulane will break for the holiday and return to the court on Dec. 28th when they face No. 17 St. John's in the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Green Wave's next game in Devlin Fieldhouse will be the American Athletic Conference home-opener against Temple on Jan. 7.
Season ticket prices for Tulane's inaugural season in The American are $300 for premium chairback seating, $200 for bleacher seating, and $400 for the family zone (2 adult/2 youth for both men's and women's basketball seasons). In addition, men's basketball season ticket holders will have the exclusive opportunity to purchase half-priced women's season tickets.
