NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team continued to roll during their opening stretch of the 2015-16 campaign, defeating Jackson State 92-49 on Tuesday night, moving to 2-0 for the sixth straight season. It marked the first time that the Green Wave scored 90+ points since they defeated Old Dominion, 92-62, back on Jan. 11, 2014.
Leading the prolific Green Wave attack was sophomore Kolby Morgan, who registered her third career 20+ scoring game with 21 points on a 7-for-10 shooting night, including a 4-for-6 mark from three-point range. Also highlighting the night was junior Leslie Vorpahl, who achieved her first career double-double with 15 points and a career best 10 assists. Furthermore, Vorpahl was just two rebounds shy of achieving a triple-double as the San Antonio native collected eight boards and six steals as well to add to her impressive stat line.
"I didn't even realize I almost had a triple-double until our coaches were telling me I only needed two more rebounds," Vorpahl stated. "One of those things where you just let the game come to you. Credit to my teammates tonight for putting me in that position."
The Wave offense tallied at least 20 points every quarter while limiting the Tigers to 14 or less. The Olive and Blue are now 3-0 all-time against Jackson State, winning by an average margin of 34 points.
Jackson State claimed their only lead of the game in the opening minute when at 5-3 the Green Wave offense took off on a 13-0 run and never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, Vorpahl's three treys had powered Tulane to a 24-11 lead. The Wave continued to flex their muscles on both ends of the court, producing a 10-2 run at the end of the second quarter, in which six points came via freshman Taylor Emery, claiming a 30-point lead (52-22) at halftime.
By the end of the 43-point Tulane victory, 11 of the squad's 12 rostered players had tallied points. Emery, who recorded 11 points vs Little Rock last Friday, continued her stellar debut with the Green Wave, adding 14 points tonight on 7-of-12 shooting. Fellow freshman Harlyn Wyatt also shone bright, recording the first double-digit rebounding performance of the season with 11 boards to go along with her seven points.
"We tried to keep our defensive intensity in both the first and second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We had some goals for the game we were trying to meet. Obviously, our schedule coming up is really tough so we're trying to get experience for the young ones. One of the things we challenged Harlyn (Wyatt) on was rebounding and she really came through tonight. Trying to get different players to step up with the things they do was really key in a game like tonight."
Speaking of rebounds, Tulane improved in that very category. After a negative six rebound differential vs Little Rock, the Wave outrebounded Jackson State, 56-46, tonight. In fact, the Olive and Blue's 56 boards tied the 2000 squad for the seventh most in a single game.
Up next, the Green Wave will have one of its biggest challenges of its non-conference schedule, traveling to Tallahassee in a return match from last season with No. 6/14 Florida State (0-1). That contest is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, Nov. 19, on ESPN3.
