MEMPHIS -- Tulane volleyball hoped to create a winning streak to close out the season after picking up a victory last Sunday against East Carolina, but it was not to be as the Green Wave were swept at Memphis on Wednesday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Tulane (10-21 overall, 4-15 The American) fell in the first set to the Tigers (18-14 overall, 9-10 The American), 25-15, before dropping sets two and three, 25-22 and 25-15, respectively.
The Green Wave hit just .162 across the match, while Memphis hit .225. No Green Wave player posted double-digit kills, as sophomore Sarah Ray led the way with nine. Memphis had three double-digit kill players, including a match-high 13 from Oluchi Agomuo.
Other than a 1-1 tie in the first set, the Green Wave trailed throughout the entire first game. Tulane hit .000 as a team with 18 digs, including seven from freshman Lisa Mordell, but the Tigers matched that with 13 kills with McKenzie Hayes, Catlin Lilly and Agomuo posting four each.
Set two saw things change, with three tie scores and two lead changes. In the closest action of the evening, Tulane posted a tie at 11 off a Memphis attack error, but Memphis held on throughout the match, despite the Green Wave hitting .275 as a team. Tulane did manage to keep things within three throughout the remainder of the set, but Memphis got a strong showing from Lilly, who hit .500 on eight swings.
After the break, Memphis came out hot and closed out the evening with a quick 25-15 win. The Green Wave hit .241 as a team, but Memphis topped that with a hitting percentage of .290. Ray led Tulane with four kills during the set.
In addition to Ray, freshman Aubrey Folk notched seven kills while junior Annie Shurtz posted six. Juniors Ally Frank and Lauren Etta tied for the team lead in assists with 13 each, while junior Tea Juric paced the squad with 12 digs. Mordell finished the night with 11. Junior Sarah Strasner led the Green Wave with three total blocks (1 solo, 2 assists).
