CINCINNATI – Tulane's volleyball squad wrapped up their 2015 season on Friday afternoon at Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena, as the Green Wave dropped a three-set match to the Bearcats to finish 10-22 overall and 4-16 in The American.
The Green Wave dropped the first and second sets by identical scores of 25-19 before falling 25-13 in the third and final set to Cincinnati (21-10 overall, 13-7 The American).
Tulane finished the season on a two-match skid after defeating East Carolina in their final home match of the year back on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Cincinnati was too much for the Green Wave to handle in the first set, as the Bearcats led from start to finish, minus two tied scores in the set. The Green Wave notched a tie at nine on a block by sophomore Sarah Ray and junior Sarah Strasner, and then tied things again at 10 after a kill by freshman Aubrey Folk. But Cincinnati then kept the lead throughout the remainder of the set on their way to the victory.
In the second game, the Green Wave notched the first point on a kill by Ray, but then trailed the remainder of the action. The Bearcats hit .263 as a team in the set, while Tulane managed to hit just .167. Junior Tea Juric posted five kills during the game while Ray notched four.
The third and final set was led from start to finish by the Bearcats. Tulane hit just .000, with two kills from Ray and Folk. Cincinnati's Carly Nolan finished the set with five kills, including the match winner at 25-13.
Ray finished the match with a team-high eight kills, while Juric (six) and Folk (five) had solid performances. Juniors Ally Frank and Lauren Etta paced the team with 13 and 12 assists, respectively, while freshman Lisa Mordell (11) and Ray (10) notched double-digit digs. Ray had two service aces to her name, as well.
At the net, Strasner and freshman Dayna Kern paced the squad with three blocks each. The Green Wave posted 14 total blocks on the afternoon.
Tulane wrapped up the season 10-22, doubling their win total from a year ago. Things look promising for the 2016 season, as Tulane will only lose one senior in Amy Lanski to eligibility.
"I think we started the season well," stated Tulane volleyball head coach Sinisa Momic. "We knew we were going to have three or four freshmen in the lineup. The team showed promise. We had a long run where we took teams to five sets. We just couldn't finish things off, and that was tough on our team. Overall though, I think the team stuck together. Our coaching staff and our support staff did what they had to do to make this a positive season. This team will be back next year, minus Amy Lanski. With a little improvement, this team can get win a lot more. We showed the potential that this team can develop and they will win a lot more in years to come."
