NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's basketball team was able to find a way to win as it snuck past the University of New Orleans, 64-62, Wednesday night at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse. It was another late lay-in by Dylan Osetkowski that earned the Green Wave the victory, marking the second time in three games that scenario has occurred. Osetkowski notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards, while graduate student Jernard Jarreau earned his first of the year with 10 points and 13 rebounds. UNO was led by Christavious Gill, whose big second half helped him finish with 15 points in the game.
Tulane (5-3) entered the second half with a double-digit lead on the Privateers (2-4) and quickly saw its largest differential of the night at 13 points early in the new period. Despite the quick buckets by the Green Wave, UNO was able to shift the momentum, stringing together 15 straight points between media timeouts to tie things up at 39-all.
The Green Wave were able to regain their lead and create some distance, going up six with just under seven minutes to play, but costly fouls by Tulane kept the Privateers hanging around. Kevin Hill scored a lay-up on back-to-back possessions for UNO to tie the game up, but a pair of free throws from Osetkowski and a lay-up by redshirt-junior Malik Morgan kept the lead in Tulane's hands.
Gill caused a Tulane turnover with just over a minute remaining, and hit a jumper just seconds later to make it a two-point game. Gill continued to play aggressive defense and stole the ball on the very next possession, this time hitting a huge three to put UNO up 62-61 with a minute to play.
With 33 seconds left it in the game, Osetkowski remained calm and took advantage of an open look at the basket, as he banked in the eventual game-winner. Jarreau sealed the victory with a block on UNO's next possession, leaving the Privateers forced to foul.
The Green Wave led 33-24 at halftime, shutting down the Privateers' leading scorer in the first half. Gill scored just two points, both from the free throw line, in the opening period. He also finished the game with four steals, as UNO was able to score 22 points off Tulane mistakes. Hill added 10 for the Privateers, while Nate Frye scored 11.
Senior Louis Dabney added 10 points for the Green Wave, while Morgan led the offense with 12 points in the game, but committed five of the team's 16 turnovers. Once again, Tulane took the rebounding advantage, 48-47. The Green Wave shot just 36.7-percent from the field in the game, and hit just two threes.
Tulane remains at home this week, returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 to host Georgia Tech at 4 p.m.
