Baseball Drops Heartbreaker in 2-1 Loss to Pepperdine
Feb 15, 2015 | Baseball
MALIBU, Calif. - Despite a masterful pitching performance from junior Tim Yandel, Tulane baseball dropped a heartbreaker to Pepperdine on Sunday when pinch hitter Jordan Qsar hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to send the Green Wave to a 2-1 loss at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Tulane (2-1) held a lead from the fourth inning on, as the Green Wave hitters got to Pepperdine's (1-2) Ryan Wilson with an RBI single from Lex Kaplan to score Garrett Deschamp. However, that was the lone run from the Green Wave on the day.
Yandel threw 6.1 innings of no-hit baseball in his first-career start while striking out five and walking only two. After getting into some trouble by loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, junior Ian Gibaut came on in relief and struck out two to end the threat. Gibaut allowed a hit in the eighth for the first base knock of the game by Pepperdine.
After getting through the eighth inning, Gibaut (0-1) retired one in the ninth before walking a batter and giving up the walk-off homer.
"Pepperdine is a good ball club, and they are going to win a lot of games," stated Tulane baseball head coach David Pierce. "It's frustrating not finishing it off when we were in position to do it, but at the same time, I'm really proud of our kids. We came out here and won the series and we'll move on."
Tulane outhit Pepperdine once again, posting six hits to Pepperdine's two. But for the second-straight day, the Green Wave recorded three errors in the field.
Yandel made his first start on the mound for the Green Wave, one year after tossing 18.0 innings in relief. The Woodstock, Georgia, native started at designated hitter for Tulane on Friday and Saturday.
"Timmy is a good two-way kid," added Pierce. "He went into the seventh and didn't give up a hit, but we didn't help him defensively and that increased his pitch count."
At the dish, Kaplan paced the Green Wave with two hits, while Deschamp, junior Richard Carthon and sophomores Jake Rogers and Hunter Williams added one each.
Pepperdine's Wilson went 6.0 innings, striking out six, and Max Gamboa (1-0) was credited with the victory after going 3.0 innings and allowing two hits.
Tulane has not swept an opponent on the road since defeating East Carolina in three-straight contests in May 2008. The last time Tulane swept a three-game series on the road against a non-conference opponent came in March 1983 when Tulane took a series at UNLV.
Tulane will return to Louisiana to play Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6pm CT before opening the home portion of their schedule against San Francisco on Friday, Feb. 20.
