Gibbs Leads Baseball to 5-1 Victory Over UConn
Mar 28, 2015 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane baseball picked up their first ever American Athletic Conference victory as junior Emerson Gibbs posted one of his best performances on the mound in a 5-1 win over UConn on Saturday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Gibbs (3-0) tossed a career-best 8.0 innings while striking out six and allowing just five hits and no runs for his third win on the year. Tulane (18-9, 1-1) took a lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back, giving Gibbs all he needed to finish off UConn (16-9, 1-1) to even the series at one game apiece.
"He just made the pitches," stated Tulane baseball head coach David Pierce on his starting pitcher. "We gave him all day, and he was cool and in control. He was very poised and just did a great job of making pitches when he had to."
Tulane added four runs in the fourth to give Gibbs a huge cushion for the remainder of the game. Senior Garrett Deschamp brought in sophomore Hunter Williams on an RBI-single in the fourth before pinch hitter Tyler Wilson knocked in sophomore Lex Kaplan and Deschamp on a base knock two batters later. Sophomore Jake Rogers scored on an RBI-single by sophomore Stephen Alemais before UConn was able to get out of the frame.
Alemais led the team at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance, including a double and a run. Sophomore Hunter Hope, who doubled, Deschamp and Wilson all recorded RBI in the contest. Alemais paced the team with two stolen bases, while he, Deschamp and Williams combined for three double plays in the field.
UConn's Anthony Kay started and was hit hard early on. The southpaw allowed seven hits and five runs - one earned - while walking two. Kay (3-2) was credited with the loss. Tulane has run their record to 9-1 when facing a starting lefty on the mound.
UConn avoided a shutout on a solo homer in the top of the ninth by Blake Davey.
In the noon CT rubber match on Sunday, Tulane will rely on righty Tim Yandel (2-1, 2.43 ERA, 16 Ks) while UConn will throw righty Jordan Tabakman (2-2, 2.70 ERA, 14 Ks). The fifth set of Tulane baseball trading cards will be passed out on Sunday, as well. Players, coaches and staff featured on the cards will be available for postgame autographs.
