NEW ORLEANS -- With 23 matches and five tournaments under their belt, the 15-8 Tulane sand volleyball team will enter into its final tournament of the regular season this weekend, when they travel down I-10 to Baton Rouge for the Battle on the Bayou. The two-day tournament starting Saturday morning will feature competition against Louisiana-Monroe, Spring Hill, UNO, South Carolina and LSU.
"This final regular season weekend is full of opportunities and we intend to take advantage of every one of them," Tulane head coach Wayne Holly said. "We still are working to achieve several of our team goals for the season and we have the chance to avenge two earlier losses against great programs."
The Wave will kick things off at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday vs. ULM, followed immediately by Spring Hill at Noon. Tulane faced both squads before at home at the Pelican Classic back on March 13 and 14, where they fell 3-2 to ULM but swept Spring Hill 5-0.
The Olive and Blue then wrap Saturday play with an even more familiar opponent in New Orleans at 7 p.m. The contest will be the fourth between the two programs this season, with the Wave claiming 5-0 victories in all three previous encounters.
On Sunday, Tulane will seek to avenge a 3-2 loss from earlier in the season, when they clash with South Carolina at 10 a.m. The pairings of Tea Juric/Jackie Wegner and Grace Weaver/Hannah Holmes were the lone tandems to claim victory vs. the Gamecocks.
Finally, the Green Wave will end its regular season the way they started it, by battling with its in-state foe LSU at 2 p.m. Tulane has yet to lose to the Tigers, as they are 3-0 lifetime against their rivals. The two squared off in Tulane's first match of the year, with the Wave earning a 3-2 win.
"The players have trained tirelessly for this weekend," Holly added. "The level of play we've achieved combined with the improvements we've made this week will put us in a great position to achieve success."
The Green Wave are led by No. 1 pair Juric and Wegner, who are coming off of a 7-1 trip and second place showing in the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament. Overall, the duo are 23-7 on the year.
Tulane can also count on its most reliable position in court three, which has seen 12 straight dual victories. Holmes and Weaver are 8-4 in the No. 3 slot while Lan Nguyen and Maddy Mertz have gone 10-0.
