QUOTE
"I liked how we played the first and second sets, slowly getting better each time out. We let the game stay too close in the third set, but the fourth set was a good response from our team. We talked about how we want to go on a long run at this point in the season. We're capable of it, we just have to be focused. When this team is focused, they can win matches."
--Tulane head coach Jim Barnes
HOW IT WAS WON
Competition was tight throughout the first set, with both teams vying for the lead from the start. On six kills from junior right-side Sarah Ray, Tulane pulled off a 25-19 victory in the first outing. The Cougars continued to hang tight to the Green Wave well into the second, but Tulane would take a 2-0 lead into the set break after winning set two 25-18.
The Green Wave opened set three on three straight points before the Cougars tied things up at eight points apiece. Houston fought to force the match to a fourth set, once again tying the game at 22-all and eventually outlasting the Green Wave 27-25.
With junior setter Justine Bowers serving, a determined Tulane team started off set four scoring ten straight points to put Houston in an early 10-1 hole. The Cougars would counter with three points of their own, but Tulane held a commanding lead to the end of the night. The Green Wave clinched the 3-1 match victory on a score of 25-12 for the largest margin of victory in a conference match-up since 2012.
On the night, Justine Bowers notched 45 or more assists for the third straight match with 48 against Houston, while freshman libero Kaylie McHugh set a career-high 28 digs. Freshman outside hitter Meghan Doyle also recorded her first career service ace.
Senior libero Makenzie Frieden set a season-high 17 digs, and senior oustide hitter Tea Juric had a season-high three service aces. Tulane is now 7-1 on the road after failing to record a single road victory in 2015.
