NEW ORLEANS - The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (1-1) displayed some resilience on Wednesday night against No. 10/9 Mississippi State (3-0) but could not overcome a first half in which 18 turnovers put them in a 20-point deficit, falling by the final score of 66-49. The Green Wave outscored the Bulldogs 33-30 in the second half, and even pulled with 12 points at the start of fourth quarter.
Senior point guard Leslie Vorpahl was the notable difference maker in tonight's contest, finishing with a team and game high 20 points. However, the Wave were without her services for a majority of the first half, as Vorpahl played only six minutes due to two early fouls.
Without the Wave's resident floor general, Tulane proceeded to commit 18 turnovers in which Mississippi State converted into 19 points. The Bulldogs then went on a 15-2 run to end the second quarter, building a 36-16 halftime lead.
Back in the lineup, Vorpahl rallied the Green Wave in the second half, ultimately converting her first nine shots to help pull Tulane within 47-35 with 9:42 left in the game. However, the top-ranked Bulldogs staved off the comeback, keeping the Wave off the scoreboard for the next five minutes to prevail with the 66-49 victory.
"It was really tough because two of the main things we emphasized was rebounding and taking care of the ball and those two factors, especially in the first half, killed us," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated.
Sophomore Harlyn Wyatt also registered a double-digit performance with 10 points tonight on 4-for-4 shooting. Meanwhile, freshman Maddison Wells led the squad with five rebounds.
Defensively, Tulane held a Mississippi State team, who was averaging 97.5 points per game on 56.9 percent shooting, to just 36.1 percent shooting overall tonight. The Wave shot 47.5 percent, but the difference came in the Bulldogs taking 21 more shot attempts and capitalizing on 24 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second chance points.
Lastly, the Bulldogs went to the free-throw line 29 times compared to the Wave's 11 attempts, as Tulane did not shoot its first free-throw into midway through the third quarter.
Up next, the Green Wave return home to host Southern Miss on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. CT, inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
