NEW ORLEANS - The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (2-1) set the tone offensively and defensively on Sunday against Southern Miss (3-1), utilizing a complete game to defeat the Golden Eagles, 86-67. Starters Kolby Morgan and Courtnie Latham led the way with 21 and 17 points, respectively, while senior Shakira Harding added a career high 16 points off the bench.
The Green Wave, who entered the contest ranked third in the nation in field goal percentage, continued its hot start of the season by shooting 56.1 percent against Southern Miss. On the other end of the floor, the Wave defense forced 29 Golden Eagle turnovers in which they converted into 27 points.
"We got a lot of offense from our defense today, earning a lot of steals, which really increased the tempo for us," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "It was great to see the production our bench gave us, adding 32 points today. It was also great to see us shoot well. Overall, a lot of good play all-around."
The Olive and Blue led the entire way this afternoon, jumping out to a 23-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes and then boasting a 40-30 advantage at the half. Later, just three minutes into the fourth quarter, Morgan and Latham combined for a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach, extending the Wave's lead to 74-53, before cruising to their final of 86-67.
Also adding to the aforementioned individual accolades was sophomore Tene Thompson's career day, setting new highs in both points (7) and rebounds (9), with the latter leading all Green Wave this afternoon.
Up next, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving for the Green Wave without a holiday tournament, as Tulane travels to San Antonio this year for the UTSA Classic. First, the Wave will challenge Eastern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. CT, followed by host UTSA, on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 2:15 p.m.
