SAN ANTONIO – Trailing 25-22 at the half, the (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (3-1) rallied behind a third quarter offensive surge before holding on to the final 62-50 victory over the Eagles in Friday's UTSA Classic opener. Kolby Morgan led the way with 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting, in which nine of those points came in the final quarter. Courtnie Latham also finished in double figures, tallying 11 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from free-throw line.
"I thought we played with a lot more energy in the second half and were more aggressive on defense," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "It was nice to get our offense going once we got a couple of steals and were able to convert on those."
The first and second quarters saw similar themes in which Tulane jumped out to an early lead, only to suffer from a cold shooting spell in the final minutes. Up 10-2 in the first, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to trail 12-11 after the opening 10 minutes. Later, the Wave found themselves up 22-18 with three minutes to go till half, only for Eastern Michigan to rally once more with a 7-0 run, garnering a 25-22 lead at the half.
However, the Olive and Blue found another gear in the third quarter, outscoring EMU 22-8 in the period, partially thanks to a defense which held the Eagles to 3-of-15 shooting in that 10-minute span.
A Shakira Harding three-pointer gave the Wave its largest lead of the game at 47-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Eastern Michigan began to chip away, cutting the lead to 53-48 with three minutes remaining.
Yet, Morgan added six points in the final 1:43, along with three combined points from Courtnie Latham and Harlyn Wyatt from the free-throw line, closing out the 62-50 win to improve to 3-1 on the young season.
Up next, the Green Wave have Saturday off before wrapping up the UTSA classic with the host school in the Roadrunners on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 2:15 p.m. CT.
