SAN ANTONIO – The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (4-1) staved off a resilient University of Texas-San Antonio (1-5) squad in the final minutes on Sunday, prevailing with the 75-66 victory in the finale of the UTSA Classic. Kolby Morgan led with a season high 22 points while Meredith Schulte shined with her first career double-double, netting 10 points and 10 rebounds. San Antonio native Leslie Vorpahl also finished in double figures, tacking on 15 points in front of her home crowd.
"I thought our bench did a great job," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "It was very timely. When Caylah went in, she got some steals and to the free-throw line, and that was key. In those last five minutes, we had some really young players on the floor and I thought they did a super job of finishing this game."
Tied at 33-33 in the opening minutes of the second half, Tulane recorded a 14-5 run, in which Morgan contributed 10 points, finishing with 12 points in the period. Yet UTSA countered with a 13-4 run, tying the game at 51-all to kick-off the fourth quarter.
Morgan's hot streak was then cooled when the junior picked up her fourth foul with 9:15 remaining as the Roadrunners jumped back ahead, 55-53. Shakira Harding then provided a spark from off the bench, kicking off a Tulane 12-2 run with a three, ultimately scoring seven points in the final quarter.
In addition, Caylah Cruickshank fired up the Wave at the 5:32 mark, scoring her career high eighth and final point of the game on a three-point play.
UTSA fired off one more run, pulling within 67-66 with 1:54 remaining, but the Wave shut the door via an 8-0 combined run from Morgan and Vorpahl, with six of the points coming from the free-throw line.
Up next, the Olive and Blue return home for one game, hosting McNeese State on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. CT inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. All tickets are just $5.
