NEW ORLEANS – The 2016-17 Tulane women's basketball team may not make its official debut until Saturday, but Green Wave fans will be able to get their first look at the team on Tuesday evening when they host Freret Street neighbor, Loyola New Orleans, in an exhibition bout at 6 p.m. CT inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. All tickets are priced at $5.
Tulane returns to action after achieving a 23-12 record last season, tying the program record for longest run in the WNIT by reaching the third round. It marked the Wave's seventh straight trip to the postseason and seventh straight 20+ win season.
The Wave welcome back a seasoned squad of nine returnees, including the following trio of starting guards from last year's squad: Kolby Morgan, Leslie Vorpahl and Courtnie Latham. Also returning to the fold this season is senior Shakira Harding, junior Caylah Cruickshank and sophomores Harlyn Wyatt, Tene Thompson, Meredith Schulte and Ksenija Madzarevic. The Olive and Blue will also look to receive a boost from freshmen Kayla Manuirirangi, Maddison Wells and Brogan Jones.
In what could arguably be Tulane's greatest strength this season is its backcourt. Last season, the Wave netted 183 total three-pointers which ranked second all-time in program history. In addition, the Green Wave shot .421 from the field and .333 from three-point range, each ranking third in the American Athletic Conference.
Leading the excellent guard play will be Tulane's two preseason All-Conference selections in Morgan and Vorpahl. Morgan averaged 17.2 points per game last season, while Vorpahl netted 5.4 assists per game. Together they represent the league's top returning scorer and assist producer.
