NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's basketball sophomore Harlyn Wyatt and her first career double-double powered the Green Wave (7-4) to a 63-51 victory over the visiting Eastern Washington Eagles (5-5) in the second game of the Tulane Classic on Wednesday evening. As a result, the Wave will now face Auburn in Thursday's title game at 5 p.m. CT, following the conclusion of the Eastern Washington vs Drake consolation game.
Wyatt finished with career highs in points (14), field goals made (6-of-9) and assists, while tying her season high of 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Kolby Morgan (15 points), Leslie Vorpahl (12 points) and Courtnie Latham (10 points) all added to the offensive flurry with double-digit points tonight.
"I thought it was a good win for us because this Eastern Washington team is a team that won't go away," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "They did a nice job, hit some three's in the second half to get back in it. I thought that was Harlyn's best game of the year. She really was a vocal leader out there."
Eastern Washington sprung out to a 10-2 lead to start the game but Wyatt ignited the spark for the Green Wave, registering 10 points and three rebounds by the end of the first quarter to keep it close, down 17-15.
Vorpahl then followed suit, pacing the Wave offense in the second quarter with 10 points while the defense held the Eagles to 26.7 percent shooting. As a result, Tulane outscored Eastern Washington, 22-8 and took a 37-25 halftime lead.
Next, the Olive and Blue captured its largest lead of the game, up 41-25 at 8:42 in the third, but Eastern Washington countered with an 18-6 run, cutting the deficit to 47-43 with 2:23 left in the period.
Yet the Green Wave instantly responded with an 11-2 run of their own with contributions from Wyatt, Vorpahl, Morgan and Tene Thompson, jumping back out to a 58-45 lead with under six minutes to go, before cruising to the final of 63-51.
