TF: Tulane opens season with successful home meet
Mar 4, 2016 | Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS - The Meet:
Tulane track and field competed in its first meet of the outdoor season, The Tulane Twilight Invitational. The Twilight Invitational was the Green Wave's only home meet this year. Other schools in attendance included Alcorn State, Dillard, Loyola-New Orleans, New Orleans, SE Louisiana, and Xavier-Louisiana.
The Results:
Tulane performed well in the day's long distance events. In the men's 1500m the Green Wave notched the top five times. Jonathon White took home first with a time of 3:58.31. White was followed by Rotich (3:58.14), Aloiloi (4:03.07), Lowery (4:08.19), and Cheruyot (4:10.13). In the women's 1500m the Green Wave claimed all three podium finishes. Emma Newton led the entire field with a time of 4:41.51 and was followed by Marvin (4:55.13) and Bartels (4:55.38). Tulane also took home first in the men's and women's 3,000m race. In addition to the Green Wave's wins in the long distance events, Tulane took home first in the women's 100 meter hurdle. Jessica Duckett posted the winning time of 13.75, setting a new school record while Dana Ohlson's time of 14.27 ranks second in Tulane history. The men and women combined for ten top-three finishes in field events, including five wins.
From Coach Peterson:
"I think it's a real treat for our kids to be able to compete and perform at home, it's so rare for us. This is such an old, but historic stadium. I love training here and I love having the opportunity to compete here because there's still some life here. It was such a beautiful day, and we were able to still produce some good marks even though it's very early in the season. On the women's side Mary Carson in the pole vault, who made attempts today at our school record, which is very unusual for this point in the season. Also, Jessica Duckett in the 100-meter hurdles, ran 13.75 into a head wind. It was also great to just get our men going. We don't have indoor track for them, so this is their opening track meet after a really long year of perpetration. To have the opportunity to compete at home in front of classmates, friends and family, it's wonderful."
