Cross Country Travels to Memphis for Season Opener
Sep 2, 2016 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – The runners of Tulane cross country will open up their 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the 14th annual Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. This event, one of the largest night time cross country meets in the US, will be hosted by Christian Brothers University at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tennessee.
"We are excited and looking forward to kicking off the 2016 cross country season at the Brooks Memphis Twilight," director of cross country and track and field Eric Peterson said. "We need to determine where our athletes are from a fitness standpoint, and there is no better way to do that than in competition. It has been obvious in training that Emmanuel [Rotich], Moses [Aloiloi] and Lauren [Bartels] have trained very well over the summer and I expect them to lead our teams."
The meet features 11 NCAA Division I schools, and Tulane will face off against nationally-ranked teams such as Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The competition begins at 9:20 PM with the women's 5K and will be followed by the men's four-mile race at 10:00 PM.
The Green Wave men will be led by sophomore Emmanuel Rotich and junior Moses Aloiloi, while sophomore Lauren Bartels will head the women's team. Emma Newton, Jessica Adamson, Caroline Lampard and Devyn Keith will sit out this weekend but will join the team at a later date.
The women's team is coming off of Tulane's highest finish at the NCAA South Central Regional since 2007, where each runner posted a personal-best time, some smashing their previous top marks. The Green Wave men are also looking to improve on a sixth-place American conference finish.
