Sep 30, 2016 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – Following a weekend break last Saturday, the Green Wave cross country team will be back in action on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 1 for the Stanford Cross Country Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course in California. The women will run at 11:50 a.m. CT followed by the men at 12:30 p.m. CT.
"The Stanford Invitational will be a new experience for our cross country program and one that we are really looking forward to," director of track and field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "Traveling to California will give our athletes the opportunity to compete mostly against teams from another region and a couple of highly ranked teams nationally. This will be a great challenge for our athletes."
The weekend will pose a handful of firsts for Tulane in the 2016 season, with the women running their first 6K of the year and the men running their first 8K. On the women's side, Peterson and his staff will look to juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels to lead the race. The men will rely on the leadership of sophomore Emmanuel Rotich, a two-time American Conference Male Runner of the Week, and junior Moses Aloiloi.
The Tulane women will match up against 19 other collegiate teams, including the no. 6 national seed in host Stanford and no. 18 San Francisco. On the men's side, Tulane will face off with 20 other cross country squads, including a no. 11-ranked Stanford.
The Green Wave last competed at the LSU Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 17 in Baton Rouge. On a muddy Highland Road Park course, the Tulane women notched a second-place team finish on one-two placings from Newton and Bartels. The men finished in third, with Rotich claiming a spot in the top two placings for the third consecutive week.
