NEW ORLEANS – The (-/RV) Tulane women's basketball team (10-5, 1-1) couldn't take advantage of holding No. 22 University of South Florida (12-1, 1-0) to a season low point total and their second lowest shooting percentage on the season Wednesday evening, ultimately falling by the final score of 62-53. The loss snapped the Green Wave's five-game win streak and 11-game win streak at home.
Leslie Vorpahl and Kolby Morgan were the lone Green Wave in double-figures tonight, scoring 16 and 13 points, respectively. The duo shot a combined 12-of-29 from the field.
"First of all, I'm disappointed – just going into half down one, in a way I thought we won the battle, holding them to a low amount of points and shooting percentage," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "We felt good about our focus on defense but really lost it in the third quarter, as the end of the period really broke the game open. We just have to make sure that against a really good team like that, we can't lose our focus at all."
The Green Wave used the three-ball to keep it mainly a one-possession game throughout the first half, as Morgan, Vorpahl, Latham and Harding all connected on different treys to tie the game at 16-all before ending the first quarter down 20-16.
Points were hard to come by in the second quarter, as the Wave edged the Bulls 9-6 in the period to pull within one at half, down 26-25. In fact, Tulane's defense held USF to single-digit points in a quarter for the first time this season, as the Bulls shot just 3-for-13.
Vorpahl and Morgan each converted lay-ups in the first minute of the third quarter to give Tulane its first and lone lead of the game at 29-26, but USF responded by going on a 15-4 run, jumping out to a 43-36 lead after three quarters.
Next, USF's Maria Jespersen connected on back-to-back three's to start the fourth, opening up a 49-36 lead, as the Bulls then used that momentum to build a lead as large as 15, up 58-43, with 2:47 to go. The Wave produced a late offensive flurry in the closing minutes to bring it to the final of 62-53.
Ultimately, the Green Wave shot better from three, 8-of-20 (40.0 percent), than from two, 14-of-42 (33.3 percent), and only attempted three total free-throws. In addition, the Bulls enjoyed a 34-18 points in the paint differential.
Up next, the Green Wave will have a chance to rebound in a major way when they travel to Philadelphia to clash with Temple on Sunday, Jan. 8, at Noon CT, airing live on ESPN2.
