Bowling Earns Third Seed for Final Day of Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational

KENNER, La. – No. 17 Tulane Bowling continued its stellar performance on the second day of the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, collecting 5,136 pins Saturday at AMF All Star Lanes.

The highlight of Saturday for the Green Wave came when freshman Madison McCall knocked down 289 pins against Duquesne to tie the all-time school record.

"Madison has done an amazing job so far. Being a freshman and having so much talent, I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings for her." Remarked head coach Hayley Veitch.

After two days, the Green Wave are in third place in the standings, with 10,380 total pins and a 207.6 pin average. No. 5 Sam Houston State (10,562 pins) and Stephen F. Austin (10,477 pins) sit first and second, respectively. Tulane will face No. 19 UAB in the first match of bracket play on Sunday.

Tulane was edged its opening match of the day to No. 5 Sam Houston State, 1095-1042, in the high scoring affair. The Green Wave went on to claim Match 7 against Southern, 974-808. Junior Hailee Hammond subbed in on the fifth frame and notched eight consecutive strikes to help push the Wave past the Jaguars.

Tulane regained its footing in Match 8, defeating No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, 1025-925. Hammond continued to have a stellar day, knocking down a career-high 245 pins. Tulane topped Duquesne 1044-925 in Match 9, where McCall notched 10 strikes and a spare to tie the record Michelle Ng set as a freshman at the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational. UAB claimed the final match of the day 1065-1051, but Tulane maintained its third-place standing.

"Overall, today was a really good performance," Veitch said. "I think we bowled very well as a team. We had better communication and better energy toward the end. We had some really exciting matches and I'm impressed with our performance. Based on how we've done the past couple days we are more than capable of beating anyone, especially tomorrow in match play."Â

McCall led all Green Wave bowlers Saturday with 1,087 pins and a 217.4 pin average, placing fifth overall. Stephanie Schwartz from Stephen F. Austin topped the individual standings with 1,288 total pins and a 245.6 pin average.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational concludes on Sunday with bracket play beginning at 8:30 a.m. Teams will compete in three best-of-seven Baker matches to determine the final standings.
