NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball team is off to Mississippi for a quick day trip on Tuesday, traveling to Hattiesburg to take on Southern Miss.
The Green Wave and Golden Eagles will tip off at 6 p.m. with the contest available to be streamed online through CUSA.tv. Live stats are also available online and Gus Kattengell has the call on the radio on WRBH 88.3 FM.
Tulane is returning to the South after spending its first weekend of the season in New England. The Green Wave got split results at the Maine Tip-Off Tournament with a win against Maine and loss to Dayton.
STARTING FIVE
1. Tulane suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Dayton on Saturday, losing to the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions 71-65.
2. The Green Wave went on an incredible 18-0 run during Saturday's loss in the second quarter, going from a 10-point deficit to an 8-point lead in the final six minutes of the half. Tulane did not allow a Dayton basket for six minutes in that span.
3. Meredith Schulte had one of the best games of her career against Dayton, scoring 19 points and playing in a career-high 39 minutes. Kolby Morgan also had a huge game, recording 28 points including a career-best six made 3-pointers.
4. Tulane ended the 2016-17 season with an 18-15 record and reached the third round of the Women's NIT, tying a program record for advancement in that tournament. Tulane finished last year ranking No. 74 in the nation in RPI, and the team reached the national postseason for the eighth straight year.
5. In the American Athletic Conference preseason poll, Tulane was picked to finish sixth in the league. Morgan was named Preseason All-Conference Second Team after earning that same honor from the league in the 2016-17.
SERIES HISTORY – SOUTHERN MISS
• Tulane's series with Southern Miss is one of its longest in program history. The Golden Eagles hold a 35-30 edge in the all-time series as the teams faced each other at least once every year between 1980 and 2014.
• When the teams met last year, Tulane came away with an 86-67 win at Fogelman in Devlin. Kolby Morgan had 21 points in the game while Tene Thompson brought down a team-high nine rebounds.
• The teams did not meet in 2015, the first time since 1979 that Tulane did not take on Southern Miss.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
• Southern Miss began its season on Friday with an 82-44 victory over NAIA school William Carey. The Golden Eagles also faced the University of Antelope Valley and defeated them 73-55 in an exhibition in early November Tulane will be the first Division I team Southern Miss has faced this year.
• Southern Miss was picked to finish sixth in Conference USA this season in a preseason poll of the league's coaches.
• The Golden Eagles had a 23-11 record last season, reaching the first round of the WNIT. Jayla King is their leading returning scorer, and she averaged 10.3 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game in 2016-17.
BATTLE FOR I-59
Tuesday's game at Southern Miss will feature a brand new trophy: The Battle for I-59 trophy. With 65 meetings between the two teams in their history over the last 40 years and 27 meetings between head coaches Lisa Stockton and Joye Lee-McNelis, the longstanding rivalry will finally have some hardware to go with it. MORGAN GOES OFF
Senior Kolby Morgan had one of the best scoring games of her career on Saturday, lighting up Dayton for 28 points. Those 28 points were the third-most in a single game in her career. Morgan's six made 3-pointers tied her career high, equaling the total she had on February 27 at Memphis. During the game, Morgan also moved up to fifth all-time in made 3-pointers (188) and fourth all-time at Tulane in attempted 3-pointers (528).
GREAT RATIOS
Tulane has used two different players at point guard this season with sophomore Kayla Manuirirangi and freshman Kaila Anderson taking their turn running the offense. Combined through two games, Manuirirangi and Anderson have a terrific assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.5 thanks to 18 assists and just four turnovers. By herself, Manuirirangi has 12 assists and just one turnover. Through Sunday, that 12.0 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the nation.
SCHULTE GOES OFF
Meredith Schulte had one of the best games of her career on Saturday against Dayton, knocking down seven field goes and five free throws to total 19 points. That number – which she got in a career-best 39 minutes – came 1 point shy of career high of 20. Schulte completed her all-around game with a team-best six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
18-0 RUN
Tulane had a six-minute stretch in the second quarter against Dayton where it could do no wrong. The Green Wave held Dayton scoreless for that six-minute stretch and scored 18 consecutive points against the defending A-10 champions to go from down 10 to ahead by 8. The Green Wave finished the final six minutes of the half on a larger 24-4 run and took a 9-point lead into halftime. During that stretch, Tene Thompson had 4 points, Schulte had 6 and Morgan had 14.
START #100
On Friday against Maine, Kolby Morgan started her 100th career game as a member of the Green Wave. She is now at 101 career starts, tied for seventh in team history. If she starts all 29 guaranteed games remaining on the team's schedule, she will finish her career first all-time in career starts at Tulane with 130. The current record is 119 starts held by Ashley Langford (2005-09).
