Â
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane played its first home game of the season on Friday, defeating Vanderbilt 71-59 for its 30th all-time victory against a current Southeastern Conference team. Tulane was led by Kolby Morgan's 27 points.
- Morgan is now just five points away from tying former high school coach Barbara Farris for fifth all-time in Tulane history for points at 1,729. Morgan also ranks fourth in the NCAA's active career scoring leader chart.
- The Green Wave had a +12 rebounding margin against Vanderbilt in the victory and had four different players with at least seven rebounds. Tulane is now 2-0 when it outrebounds an opponent and 0-2 when it loses the rebounding battle.
- Tulane ended the 2016-17 season with an 18-15 record and reached the third round of the Women's NIT, tying a program record for advancement in that tournament. Tulane finished last year ranking No. 74 in the nation in RPI, and the team reached the national postseason for the eighth straight year.
- In the American Athletic Conference preseason poll, Tulane was picked to finish sixth in the league. Morgan was named Preseason All-Conference Second Team after earning that same honor from the league in the 2016-17 postseason.
SERIES HISTORY – IOWA STATE
- Tulane and Iowa State have met only one time in their history, with the Green Wave claiming a 68-61 victory at the Malibu Classic in 1996.
- Friday's game will be the first time the teams have met nearly 21 full years.
- After Friday, both meetings between Iowa State and Tulane will have been on a neutral site.
SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
- The Cyclones, who hail from Ames, Iowa, are 2-1 on the season. They opened their year by defeating South Dakota, lost on the road at Northern Iowa and claimed a 61-45 win against UMKC at home on Monday night.
- Bridget Carleton is Iowa State's leading scorer at 17.7 points per game, and Madison Wise is close to averaging double figures at 9.7 points per game. Kristin Scott is the team's top rebounder with 10.0 boards per game.
- The Cyclones have made the NCAA Tournament 10 of the last 11 years and 16 of the last 20 years. They are averaging 65.0 points per game this year and allowing 59.3 points per game.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Green Wave's two games in the Junkanoo Jam will be their fourth and fifth road games of the season. Seven of the Green Wave's first eight games of the year are being played on the road before five consecutive home games in December.
Â
SHE'S NUMBER FOUR
Tulane senior guard Kolby Morgan finds herself near the top of the nation's active career scorers list. With 1,724 points in her career, Morgan is the fourth-highest scoring active player in the nation. Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell tops the list at 2,657 points, Michigan's Katelynn Faherty is second at 2,091 points, Mississippi State's Victoria Vivians is third with 1,795 points, and Morgan is next in line.
Â
WHERE MORGAN RANKS THIS YEAR
Morgan is already having a stellar year for Tulane, ranking in the top 25 in the nation in multiple categories. Morgan is ninth in the country in made 3-pointers with 15, 14th in the country in 3-point attempts with 34, 20th in made 3-pointres per game at 3.75, 23rd in points per game with 22.5 and ninth in total points with 90. Morgan is also 24th in made field goals with 29 and 22nd in field goal attempts with 65.
SURPASSING HER COACH
Morgan currently sits at 1,724 points in her Tulane career, just five points shy of fifth all-time in team history. When Morgan scores six more points, she will pass Barbara Farris on the Green Wave's all-time list. Farris, with 1,729 points, was Morgan's high school basketball coach at John Curtis Christian.
BEATING AN SEC TEAM
Tulane's win over Vanderbilt on Friday was a major-conference victory for the Green Wave, and specifically a win over a Southeastern Conference foe. Tulane is no stranger to wins over SEC schools, though as it has four wins over Alabama, one over Arkansas, two over Auburn, two over Florida, eight over LSU, three against Ole Miss, five against Mississippi State, four against Texas A&M and now one against Vanderbilt. Before Friday, Tulane's last win over an SEC team was in the Tulane classic against Auburn on December 22, 2016.
Â
SPREAD OUT REBOUNDING
Junior Tene Thompson topped the Green Wave with eight rebounds against Vanderbilt on Friday, but three other Tulane players had seven rebounds as Meredith Schulte, Harlyn Wyatt and Kolby Morgan all brought down seven boards. No Tulane player has recorded a double-figure rebounding game this year, but those four are all averaging at least 5.3 boards per game.
Â
CRASHING THE BOARDS
In the Green Wave's 71-59 victory over Vanderbilt, the team owed a substantial portion of its success to rebounding. After being outrebounded by 23 and 6, respectively, in losses to Dayton and Southern Miss, Tulane outrebounded Vanderbilt by 12 in the home victory. Tulane is now 2-0 in games where it outrebounds the opponent and 0-2 in games where it loses the rebounding battle.
FIRST HOME GAME
Tulane's game against Vanderbilt on Friday was its first home game all season in its fourth contest overall. That marked the first time Tulane has waited until Game 4 to compete at Fogelman in Devlin since the 2002-03 season. Back then, the Green Wave played road games at James Madison, Oregon State and Portland before returning to New Orleans and defeating Alabama State.
Â
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
Against Vanderbilt:
- Kolby Morgan eclipsed 1,700 points in her career.
- Ksenija Madzarevic is one rebound shy of 50.
- Kolby Morgan will reach 200 career assists with two more and 200 made 3-pointers with five more. She is also two blocks away from 50, and she needs just 5 points to move up to fifth all-time at Tulane.
- Meredith Schulte needs 10 more defensive boards for 200.
- Harlyn Wyatt will reach 100 offensive rebounds with three more.
- Tene Thompson is 4 points away from 200.
