NEW ORLEANS - After winning as many games during the month of November as all of last season, the Tulane men's basketball will play its second road contest of the season against reigning national champion and 13th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, December 3 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT) at the Dean Smith Center and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN. Mike Couzens will handle play-by-play commentary while Jason Capel provides color commentary.
HISTORY LESSONS
• The Green Wave and Tar Heels will clash for the 17th time in history, as North Carolina came away with a 95-75 victory in New Orleans in last year's season opener at the Smoothie King Center. UNC also earned a win over Tulane in the Dean Smith Center on December 16, 2015.
• The Green Wave and Tar Heels have met on the hardwood in six different decades: the 1920's (four times), the 1960's (four times), the 1970's (four times), the 1980's (once), the 1990's (once) and the 2010's (three times). The programs first dueled on March 3, 1925 in the Southern Conference Tournament in Atlanta.
• Tulane head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr., coached three former North Carolina players during his 17 years as an NBA head coach: James Worthy and Sam Perkins (1990-92 Los Angeles Lakers) and Rasheed Wallace (1997-2001 Portland Trail Blazers).
• The contest also marks the 10th time Tulane will face a reigning national championship team and the first occasion since taking on Connecticut in 2014-15. Other instances include North Carolina (1982-83), Indiana (1981-82), Louisville (1980-81), UCLA (1969-70), Kentucky (1948-49, 1951-52 and 1958-59) and Kansas (1952-53).
LAST TIME OUT
• Cameron Reynolds scored a season-high 28 points and eclipsed 1,000 for his career as Tulane made 14 3-pointers to defeat Alcorn State, 81-65, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
• Reynolds matched a career-high with seven 3-pointers made which also rank as the second most in a single game in program history. He also contributed five rebounds, three assists and a game-high three blocks.
• Samir Sehic shot 5-or-6 with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench for Tulane (6-1), while Melvin Frazier added 11 points. Ray Ona Embo also reached double-figures with 10 points, as Jordan Cornish compiled nine points, eight rebounds and led all players with five assists.
• The Green Wave's 14 treys tied for the third most in a game in school history and were the most since the program standard of 16 was set at UCF in January of 2015
• Tulane finished the night shooting 25-for-53 (.472) overall and 14-for-31 (.452) beyond the arc while making 17 of 24 (.708) free throws. Alcorn State went 25-for-64 (.391) from the floor and 11-for-33 (.333) from outside.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
• Picked to finish second in the 2017-18 preseason Atlantic Coast Conference media poll, North Carolina returns eight letterwinners and two starters from last year's national championship team.
• Senior point guard and 2017 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player Joel Berry II was named to the preseason All-ACC First Team.
• Following a 63-45 defeat to Michigan State last Sunday, the Tar Heels have defeated Michigan and Davidson in their last two games.
REYNOLDS SURPASSES 1,000 POINTS
• Redshirt senior Cameron Reynolds scored his 1,000th career point in the 81-65 win over Alcorn State on Nov. 29 to become the 36th player in program history to reach the milestone.
• While his seventh point of the night gave him 1,000, Reynolds poured in a season-high 28 points in the effort and moved from No. 37 to No. 34 on the school's all-time scoring list in that game alone.
REYNOLDS AGAINST RANKED FOES
• Cameron Reynolds played some of his best basketball against Tulane's toughest opponents during the 2016-17 season, averaging 20.3 points per game against teams in the AP poll.Â
• Reynolds scored 21 points against No. 6 North Carolina, 17 points at No. 23 Cincinnati, 20 points against the 20th-ranked Bearcats and 23 points at 19th-ranked SMU.
• In those contests, he shot an impressive 29-for-59 (.492) from the field and 13-for-23 (.565) beyond the three-point arc while making 10 of 12 (.833) free throws and in 36.5 minutes per game.
TWENTY DIMES MULTIPLE TIMES
• Tulane has combined for at least 20 assists on three occasions this season and is unbeaten in those contests.
• The Green Wave served up 21 helpers in the 102-96 season-opening win over LIU Brooklyn on Nov. 10, 21 in the 80-53 victory over Colorado State on Nov. 17 and 20 more in the 81-65 win against Alcorn State on Nov. 29.
JAMAICAN HISTORY
• Tulane became the first team to win an NCAA Division I college basketball game in Jamaica in an 80-53 victory over Colorado State at the 2017 Jamaica Classic on Nov. 17.
• Melvin Frazier was voted MVP of the tournament, while Cameron Reynolds was chosen to the all-tournament team following Tulane's 2-0 showing in Montego Bay which, was capped by a 63-55 victory against Fordham on Nov. 19.
• Frazier scored 23 points in both games and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against Fordham, while Reynolds poured in a game-high 25 points against Colorado State.
