NEW ORLEANS – To supplement Tulane's highest placing at the NCAA South Central Regional meet since the early 1990s in the fall, the women of the Green Wave cross country team have once again earned recognition for their excellence both on and off the course. Last week, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2016 Cross Country Team Academic Awards, highlighting the Tulane women as an All-Academic Team.
"This team takes their academics very seriously while also committing to competing throughout the entire school year," associate head cross country coach Michael Nussa said. "It's a nice honor for them to be recognized for their success in the classroom and I'm proud of them for this accomplishment."
Tulane was one of 242 women's teams across the country recognized for academic accomplishments, this year alongside seven other teams from the American Athletic Conference. In order to receive academic honors, teams had to hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale in the fall semester while also performing well throughout the season.
These academic honors cap a season where three Tulane women were also recognized for their competitive successes, with junior Emma Newton and redshirt freshman McKenzie Melius being named to All-Louisiana teams and junior Lauren Bartels receiving LSWA Honorable Mention. The women wrapped up the 2016 season at the NCAA South Central Regional, but also eclipsed their highest-ever placing at the American Athletic Conference Championship meet.
