NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team attempted a five-run comeback in the ninth inning, but came up short and fell to Army, 7-4, Sunday afternoon at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Senior designated hitter Jarret DeHart went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and senior first baseman Hunter Williams finished with two base hits and two RBI for the Green Wave (1-2). DeHart completed a 5-for-9 weekend in which he tallied three RBI and scored four runs.
The Green Wave fell behind, 7-2, after five innings, but showed some life in the bottom of the ninth. DeHart singled up the middle and catcher Jeremy Montalbano doubled, setting up runners at second and third with no outs. Williams drove home Grant Witherspoon, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and junior left fielder Grant Brown singled into left to plate pinch runner Michael Kirsch. Sal Gozzo drove a pinch-hit double down the left field line, but that was as close as Tulane got.
"We just have to stay together. It's not going our way right now, and it's three games into a long season," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We have to find ways to get out of this little rut that we're in right now. It's early. It's not like we have to go undefeated. We have to learn from the losses, and move forward."
Army scored two runs in the first and third innings, and three runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Designated hitter Alex Dickerson provided all seven RBI for the Black Knights, hitting a two-run single in the first inning, a two-run double in the third and a three-run double with the bases loaded in the fifth.
Tulane responded in the first inning with a pair of runs to tie the score, 2-2. Senior center fielder Lex Kaplan led off with a walk, and scored on DeHart's opposite field double to left center. DeHart then moved around to score on a line drive single into left center by Williams.
After the first-inning burst, the Green Wave only managed three hits between the second and eighth stanzas. Senior second baseman Jake Willsey singled with one out in the second, and stole both second and third. In the fifth, Montalbano, who caught four runners stealing Sunday, walked and moved to third on Williams' single. In the eighth, Gozzo hit a one-out double, but the runners in those innings accounted for five of the 13 left on base in the game by the Wave.
Freshman Kody Hoese got his first start at shortstop, and finished with one of Tulane's nine hits in the ballgame. The Wave used five pitchers, including three freshmen behind starter Ross Massey (0-1), who lasted 3.0 innings. Keagan Gillies (1.1 innings), Jack Hogan (2.2 innings) and Robert Price (1.0 inning) all saw their first collegiate action. Hogan struck out two and retired all eight batters he faced. Sophomore Brandon Issa tossed the final frame.
Army's Carter Van Gytenbeek (1-0) earned the win with 4.0 innings in relief of starter Dan Gibbons, who pitched 4.2 frames. Sam Messina got his first save of the season.
Tulane will play on the road Tuesday when it travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a 6 p.m. first pitch at Alumni Field in Hammond. Live stats will be available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com, and the game will be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH.
