NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's outdoor squad will head west for the second meet of the young season on Friday for the Louisiana Classics, a two-day meet hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette at the Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility on March 17-18. Following a weekend off, the Green Wave hope to continue their outdoor successes after the season-opening Early Bird Twilight Invitational that saw four new school records.
THE MEET
Tulane will send the majority of its outdoor roster to Lafayette, where the Green Wave are set to compete in nearly two dozen events over the two-day meet. Tulane will face mostly in-state competition with LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Nicholls State, UL-Monroe and Southern all making the drive to Lafayette.
Competition at the Louisiana Classics kicks off on Friday afternoon with the women's pole vault and javelin beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Ragin' Cajun Soccer/Track Facility. Last time out, Tulane had three pole vaulters clear 4.00m – Alyssa Applebee, Rebekah Markel and Mary Carson Pitts – two of whom would jump higher than the previous school-record breaking height.
The Green Wave have also enjoyed national-caliber marks in the javelin, with Daliadiz Ortiz throwing for a mark of 51.87m, the farthest in the nation this season, to break a school record of her own. Jacqueline Esmay will also look to improve upon her school record in the hammer throw set at the Early Bird Twilight two weeks ago.
Also on Friday, sophomore Emmanuel Rotich, who broke the 3,000m school record in his last outing, will compete in an invitation-only edition of the men's 1,500m.
Saturday will see the remainder of the field events, notably the men's and women's shotput and the men's discus, before action kicks off on the track at 2:00 p.m. Tulane will get started with the women's 3,000m steeplechase, followed by the 1,500m run at 2:50 featuring 11 Tulane women.
Sophomore Jessica Duckett and freshman Brandi Hughes, fresh off of podium performances at the indoor conference meet, will run their first hurdle event of the outdoor season with the women's 100m hurdles at 3:30.
Tulane will close out the weekend with the men's and women's 800m and the men's 400m hurdles.
UP NEXT
Tulane will hit the road for its first split-squad meets of the season next weekend, with half of the team traveling to the Victor Lopez Invitational in Texas and the other half trekking to the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina.
