NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's basketball team (17-14) will look to continue its run in the WNIT when they host a familiar foe in Grambling (19-14) in second round action on Sunday, March 19. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. CT inside Fogelman in Devlin. Tickets are just $7 and Tulane students will be provided tickets courtesy of Coach Stockton. There is also a 2-for-1 promotion: bring your Sunday Tulane baseball ticket vs Columbia to Fogelman in Devlin and you will be granted admittance into the game.Â
LAST TIME OUT
• Tulane rode behind a strong effort in the third quarter, outscoring UT Arlington 23-8 to gain a 45-36 advantage and a lead they would never surrender, downing the Mavericks by the final of 62-53.
• The Wave ended the third quarter on an 18-3 run, getting contributions from Morgan, Vorpahl, Latham, Harding and Madzarevic. Tulane's defense held UTA to without a field goal for an eight-minute stretch in the third.
• Morgan recorded her 18th 20+ point performance on the year with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Vorpahl also tallied double-figures with 13 points, which included a 6-for-7 effort from the free-throw line.
SERIES HISTORY - GRAMBLING
• Tulane & Grambling are tied at 2-2 in the all-time series. The first ever meeting took place in
Nov. of 1981.
• Tulane faced Grambling in this year's season opener, as the Wave were victorious at home by the score of 79-56.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
• Grambling is 19-14 overall and was co-regular season champions in the SWAC with a 14-4 record. Grambling lost 70-66 to Texas Southern in the SWAC Championship game.
• In the First Round of the WNIT, Grambling defeated Ole Miss, 78-75, in Oxford. Shakyla Hill and Monisha Neal led with 17 points each. It marked the Lady Tigers first post season win in a major tournament in the modern era.
• Hill leads the team with 15.1 ppg on 48.6 percent shooting. Also leads the rebounding effort with her 7.8 boards per game.
• Neal and Jazmin Boyd also average double-digits with 11.1 and 11.8 ppg, respectively.
• Grambling ranks 36th in the nation in free throw attempts (632) and 75th in made free throws (419).
• Defensively, the Tigers rank 26th in the nation with their 10.5 steals per game. Also rank 10th in forced turnovers at 20.91.
HOME SWEET HOME
Tulane has never lost at home in the WNIT, improving to 6-0 after the win vs UTA. This season, the Wave are 11-5 at home, where they have produced a +6.1 scoring margin, putting up 65.8 ppg.
WNIT HISTORY
Tulane is making its seventh appearance in the WNIT, where they are 8-6 overall. Last season, the Wave tied its longest run in the WNIT by reaching the third round after victories over Alabama and Georgia Tech.
8 STRAIGHT POSTSEASONS
Tulane's WNIT bid marks the eighth straight year for postseason play. The Wave made the NCAA Tournament in 2010, which kick-started the eight year run. The Olive and Blue reached the Big Dance again in 2015, and has made the WNIT every other year.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Tulane's strength of schedule ranks 40th in the country. The Green Wave challenged 12 total teams that made the postseason, including seven who made the NCAA Tournament. Of those seven, five received votes or were ranked inside the top-25: No. 1 UConn, No. 7 Mississippi State, No. 17 North Carolina State, USF and Temple. LSU and Auburn round out the seven.
All-in-all, six American Athletic Conference teams reached postseason play, with SMU and UCF joining Tulane in the WNIT.
LATHAM'S LONGEVITY
When Courtnie Latham takes to the court vs Grambling in the second round of the WNIT, it will mark the senior's 131st career game. That number will land Latham in a tie for second all-time in program history for most games played alongside Adesuwa Ebomwonyi. The top spot belongs to Olivia Grayson at 134.
THANK YOU SENIORS
Thank you to a senior class responsible for four straight postseasons. Tulane's seniors have been a part of the program's NCAA Tournament berth in 2015 (first at-large bid since 2003), tying the program's best run in the WNIT in 2016 (third round), three 20+ win seasons, and 82 overall wins. Tulane seniors also went 47-17 at home, thus winning 73 percent of their games inside Fogelman in Devlin. They've also been one of the most prolific three-point shooting classes in program history. The 2014-15, 2015-16, and now 2016-17 squads all rank inside the top-five in program history in made three-pointers in a single season.
