NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's outdoor track and field squad will compete on consecutive weekends for the first time this season as the Green Wave head to Houston for Rice's 35th annual Victor Lopez Classic. The weekend's meet will be Tulane's second trip to the Wendel D. Ley Track in as many years.
THE MEET
Tulane will send a slew of both men and women track and field athletes to Houston this weekend, with 28 women competing across over a dozen events and 12 men competing in nine.
Action kicks off at the Wendel D. Ley Track just before noon on Friday with the women's hammer throw, while the running events begin just after 7:00 with the women's 1,500m. That evening, sophomore Joshua Cheruyot will make his season debut in the 3,000m steeplechase, while Tulane will send four athletes – Lauren Bartels, Emma Newton and Mary Catherine Stovall for the women and Moses Aloiloi for the men – to the starting lines of the men's and women's 5,000m runs.
Saturday will see the rest of the Tulane entrants, opening up with the men's shot put and women's discus at 10:00, followed by the women's javelin at noon. At the Louisiana Classics last weekend, redshirt senior Daliadiz Ortiz broke her second javelin school record in as many meets with a throw of 51.88m.
On the track, sophomore Jessica Duckett, who sits at no. 2 all-time in the record book, will make her season debut in the event alongside teammates Brandi Hughes and Dominique Hever. Tulane will also see a performance from freshman Raymond Kibet in the men's 200m.
In addition to Victor Lopez, Tulane will also send a pair of male runners to the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. Sophomore Emmanuel Rotich will run the men's 5,000m, while freshman Raymond Kibet, following his race in Houston, will run the 400m at the Paul Derr Track in Raleigh.
UP NEXT
Tulane will take next weekend off before returning to Texas for the Houston Alumni Invitational on April 8, hosted by American Athletic Conference foe Houston.
