QUOTE
"The highlight of today was Mikayla Sonneborn running a big personal record in the steeplechase because she's continuing to show the improvement that we want to see for her in that event at this point in the season. Lauren Bartels also ran her first 5K ever on the track, a very steady race and an outstanding performance from her. Jacqueline Esmay earning second place in the hammer throw was outstanding because she continues to improve her consistency. We're looking optimistically to our performances tomorrow and building off of what happened this evening."
-- Associate Head Coach Doug FraleyHIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY ONE OF THE VICTOR LOPEZ CLASSIC
Jacqueline Esmay kicked off the action at the Wendel D. Ley Track in Houston, notching her third-farthest career throw on a mark of 53.75m (176-4). Her results in the hammer throw marked the third time in as many meets she has cleared a distance of 50m or farther, all while earning her a second-place finish in the event.
On the track, Mikayla Sonneborn made an impressive showing in the 3,000m steeplechase for the second straight week, placing third in a competitive field on a personal-best 11:05.11 in the event. Her week-to-week improvements have been promising, as she shaved fifteen seconds off of her time from the previous meet.
The distance PRs continued in the women's 5,000m, with Lauren Bartels placing fourth to lead the Tulane women in her first-ever 5K on the track. Her time of 17:17.76 landed her at third all-time in the Green Wave record books, followed by Emma Newton, who also ran a career best tonight on her time of 17:24.79 that now ranks fourth in Tulane history.
On the men's side, junior Moses Aloiloi came away with a fourth-place finish in the men's 5,000m on a time of 15:05.62.
