NEW ORLEANS – Tulane Athletics will honor the 1992 Metro Conference Baseball Championship team this weekend during its series against Stetson at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Saturday, players and coaches from the 1992 squad will be recognized on the field prior to the 4 p.m. first pitch.
Â
The 1992 Green Wave won the Metro Conference Tournament Championship, its first conference tournament title in 10 years. Tulane's NCAA Regional appearance was the first in three years for the program, and sparked a run of 12 regionals over the next 15 years for Tulane baseball.
Â
Led by head coach Joe Brockhoff, and assistant coaches Brian Migliore, Tommy Mathews and Joey Brockhoff, the Green Wave completed the season with a 39-24 record and a 9-9 conference mark.
Â
The Green Wave were the fourth seed in the 1992 Metro Tournament, held at Turchin Stadium, and swept through the field unbeaten for its first conference tournament championship since 1982. It started with a 7-4 victory over Southern Miss and a complete-game win by Mike Romano. Next was a 7-4 defeat of top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, spurred by run-scoring doubles by Lance Licciardi and Alfredo Mesa, and a complete-game, seven-strikeout effort from David Welch.
Â
Against second-seeded Louisville, Tulane scored four runs in the first inning, but had to score twice in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run double by Alfredo Mesa to pull out the 8-7 victory. In the semifinals against UNC Charlotte, the Green Wave won a 15-13 slugfest that included 34 total hits and eight pitchers. Rick Chanove had four hits, while Licciardi tallied three hits and five RBI, as the Wave took a 12-6 lead after three innings and held on to advance to the finals.
Â
Facing Louisville in the championship game, Mike Romano once again turned in a pitching performance for the ages, going the distance for the second time in the tournament. Chanove homered and Mike Triessl hit an RBI double to give the Wave an early 2-0 lead. With the game tied, 4-4, and runners on the corners in the eighth inning, Matt Carter pinch-hit and drove a single into right field to give the Wave a 5-4 lead, and Romano retired the next six Cardinals batters to close out the championship victory.
Â
Pitcher Mike Romano, second baseman Rick Chanove and outfielder Lance Licciardi were named to the All-Tournament Team. Romano set Metro Conference Tournament records with 22 strikeouts, and tied the mark for innings pitched after throwing two complete games victories, and earned Outstanding Performer honors.
Â
At the end of the regular season, four Tulane players were honored with first-team All-Metro Conference selections: Romano, Triessl, catcher Larry Schneider and outfielder Tom Morton. Romano was also named First-Team All-America by Baseball America, and Morton was selected to the CoSIDA District VI All-Academic squad.
Â
The Green Wave opened the NCAA South I Regional in Baton Rouge with a 4-2 victory over South Alabama in 12 innings. Romano came through with a complete-game effort to earn his 17th victory of the season, and finished the day with 12 strikeouts, while scattering eight hits. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings and remained that way until the top of the 12th when John Livingstone and Chanove hit back-to-back RBI singles to send the Wave to the win.
Â
Tulane dropped its next two games, 8-0 to Cal State Fullerton and 7-3 to LSU to end the season, but the 1992 squad had built the foundation for an unprecedented run of success in Green Wave baseball history.
