NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball trailed 7-0 after the first inning, and was unable to completely recover in a 12-10 defeat to Stetson Sunday afternoon at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (9-15) scored four runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but found themselves chasing a deficit the whole game. Trailing 9-1 in the fifth, the Wave put four runs on the board, then added four more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-9. The Hatters (10-16), however, added to their lead with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Â
"When you set the table for somebody to be up 7-0 after one, there's not much food left to eat," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "That said, it took us a little while to get going – give their pitcher some credit. It doesn't matter when you get it going, it's just whether you can make your adjustments in-game. It's whether you can start to understand the velocity, the location and the spins, and we did. Unfortunately, we were chasing seven or eight runs."
Â
Stetson scored seven runs on four hits and four walks in the top of the first inning. Singles by Mike Spooner, Jack Gonzalez, Jorge Arenas and Ben Rowden accounted for five of those runs.
Â
Tulane got on the board in the second inning on a long home run by Grant Brown, his first of the year. The solo homer hit the framework on top of the video board. The Hatters regained a seven-run lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Rowden that made the score 8-1, and added a ninth run on Rowdon's RBI single in the fifth.
Â
The Green Wave showed life and began a comeback in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally to cut the deficit to 9-5. Kody Hoese bunted for a single and Matt Rowland drew a two-out walk. Grant Witherspoon, Sal Gozzo and Hunter Williams followed with consecutive RBI doubles. Gozzo's double plated two runs, and Williams' double was his second of the game.
Â
In the seventh, Witherspoon and Lex Kaplan crushed two-run home runs to pull the Wave within 11-9. Rowland drew a one-out walk, and Witherspoon launched his third homer of the season with a ball that appeared to be still rising as it left the ballpark and landed among the trees beyond the right center field wall. After Williams hit a two-out single, Kaplan launched his third homer of the year into the Rosen Lost beyond the right center field wall.
Â
Stetson increased its lead to 11-5 in the seventh when Rowdon singled and scored on a balk, and Andrew MacNeil walked and scored on a base hit by Austin Hale. The Hatters added a run in the eighth on a solo home run by Gonzalez that made the score 12-9.
Â
Tulane threatened in the ninth, but came up with just one run. With Witherspoon on first after a fielder's choice, Gozzo bunted and reached on an error by the first baseman, putting runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Williams plated Witherspoon, but a groundout to second ended the game.
Â
Witherspoon finished the game with three RBI and three runs scored, and Williams went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Tulane starter Ross Massey (0-4) took the loss, while Stetson starter Logan Gilbert (4-0) earned the win.
