PALM COAST, Fla. – The Tulane women's golf team travels to the Sunshine State this weekend for the 2017 American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship being played on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
Tulane opens first-round play on Sunday at 7:50 a.m. Tee times on Monday and Tuesday are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. The American Digital Network is set for live coverage of Tuesday's final round beginning at 10 a.m.
Entering this year's championship as the No. 6 seed and ranked 96th in the latest Golfstat.com Rankings, the Green Wave look to improve on back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the program's first two conference championship appearances as a member of The American. This year's nine-team field is led by top seed and 28th-ranked UCF, seeking its second conference title in three years. Second-seeded SMU (39th), third-seeded Houston (44th), fourth-seeded East Carolina (57th), fifth-seeded Memphis (66th), seventh-seeded Cincinnati (119th), eighth-ranked Tulsa (106th) and ninth-ranked USF (116th) round out the championship participants.
Tulane is slated to open play with youthful lineup featuring three freshmen and two sophomores with sophomore Laura Munoz at No. 1, freshman Gabrielle Correia at No. 2, sophomore Sofia Goicoechea at No. 3, freshman Haydyn Gibson at No. 4 and redshirt freshman Elise Genoux at No. 5. On the season, Munoz leads the Wave in stroke average at 74.81 and recorded the best individual finish so far, tying for 10th at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
"We've had a good week (of practice) up to this point," said head coach Lorne Don. "We had two tournaments that we had back-to-back, both LSU and Clemson, and saw some things we needed to work on. We've been really focusing on our wedge play, dialing those in and getting some good looks at birdies. We're excited to get to the Conservatory."
