Â
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Tulane scored first for the third straight game, but dropped its American Athletic Conference series finale at Cincinnati, 11-1, in seven innings Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.
Â
The Green Wave (14-18, 4-2 American) won the series with 16-8 and 6-2 victories Friday and Saturday. Hunter Williams put Tulane on the board in the first inning with a mammoth home run over the 30-foot fence in center field, which sits 400 feet from home plate.
Â
The Bearcats (15-16, 2-4 American) took their first lead of the weekend with two runs in the bottom of the second, then added nine across the fourth through seventh innings to win by 10 runs after seven innings, a conference rule for Sunday games.
Â
"There for a little while, we had one run on eight hits, so I thought we were doing OK offensively, but we weren't able to plug some runs through for the number of hits we had," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We just got too far behind, and the score got a little bit out of hand."
Â
Tulane had eight hits through four innings, but was only able to score the lone run. The Wave left runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings, including a double play to end the frame with the bases loaded in the fourth. After that inning, Tulane had one baserunner, on a walk in the fifth inning.
Â
Cincinnati scored two runs in the second on a two-run, inside the park home run by Manny Rodriguez. Lex Kaplan dove for the ball in left field and appeared to be injured, limping to throw the ball back to the infield, but he remained in the game until the sixth inning. Cincinnati added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Joey Thomas, an RBI single by Eric Santiago and a throwing error on a double steal plated three runs in the fifth to make the score 6-1. In the sixth, RBI by A.J. Bumpass and Jace Mercer, and a pair of wild pitches scored four runs, and a bases-loaded hit batter in the seventh made it 11-1.
Â
Chase Solesky (1-2) pitched 3.0 innings in the start, and took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits. Davis Orndorff (2-2) allowed a run on eight hits in 6.0 innings, and earned the win.
Â
The Green Wave plays host to Nicholls State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The game can be heard on 88.3 FM WRBH and the TuneIn Radio app, and live stats and live video will be available on www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
