Cross Country Travels Upriver for LSU Invitational
Sep 15, 2017 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – On the heels of a dominating performance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival last weekend, the men and women of Tulane cross country head upriver Saturday, Sept. 15, to compete at the LSU Cross Country Invitational. The event, set to take place at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge, features the women beginning a 5k race at 7:30 a.m., while the men run a 6k at 8:10 a.m.
"This is still our preseason, and we're working on developing a better feel for running as a team in a pack," director of track & field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "We're using these local meets as a way to work on and promote the concept of doing a better job of running as a team. It's much harder to practice those things in bigger, more competitive races, so these meets are ideal for us to be able to try to work on some things to get better."
Last weekend at Lafreniere Park, the men's and women's squads each recorded first-place overall finishes, running against Dillard University, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Spring Hill College, Southern-Baton Rouge, Tougaloo College and Xavier University Louisiana. Senior Moses Aloiloi won the men's 5k, while redshirt sophomore Mckenzie Melius, sophomore Sarah Cella, freshman Rachel Maue and sophomore Mary Catherine Stovall finished second, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, to the lead the Green Wave.
This weekend, seniors Lauren Bartels and Emma Newton and freshman Bridgid Selfors will run, after sitting out last Saturday to rest. Junior Emmanuel Rotich will continue to rest, as he is set to return at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 29 in South Bend, Ind.
"Emmanuel is the only one that won't be running," Peterson said. "The women will be at full strength; Emma and Lauren will be back. The men will run the same lineup that we ran last week and, hopefully, try to build on the improvement that we saw last week compared to the way the team ran at Temple."
Last season at the LSU Invitational, Tulane had a strong outing, as the women notched a second-place team finish on first-second placings from Newton and Bartels, while the men finished in third. Newton notched a time of 17:54.29 to land herself at the top of the podium, while Rotich finished in second place on the men's side (14:51.57).
