NEW ORLEANS -- After traveling to Philadelphia, Pa. for last week's Temple Invitational, Tulane cross country stays close to home this Saturday, as the program will head to Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La., to compete at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival. The men will begin at 7:50 a.m., while the women start at 8:25 a.m.
"We're going to use this coming meet to give our entire roster, everybody that's healthy, an opportunity to compete and continue to improve, but also try to develop a better sense of pack-running, which we need to improve on going forward," director of track and field and cross country Eric Peterson said. "We're just focused on improving and getting better, and this meet is going to give us a good opportunity to do just that."
The meet, hosted by Loyola University, will feature nine collegiate programs, including Tulane and Loyla. The Green Wave's runners will also compete against runners Dillard University, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Spring Hill College, Southern-Baton Rouge, Tougaloo College, and Xavier University Louisiana. Tulane, however, will be without junior Emmanuel Rotich, seniors Lauren Bartels and Emma Newton, and freshman Bridgid Selfors, who are held out of the event for rest.
"Emmanuel will not be competing again until the [Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational], and our top three women, Lauren, Emma, and Bridgid, won't compete as well, so it's going to give other athletes on the team an opportunity to step up in a scoring role and impact the team in a bigger way than they might otherwise do if we were running at full strength," Peterson said.
Last season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Tulane had a strong outing, as the women's and men's team recorded first-place and second-place finishes, respectively. Current redshirt sophomore Mckenzie Melius took the top spot last year, pacing the Green Wave with a time of 17:31.0, nearly eight seconds faster than the second-place runner. Current senior Jennifer LaMori finished in third place, while sophomores Mary Catherine Stovall and Aislinn Roberts rounded out the top-10 finishers, leading the Tulane women to a first-place team finish.
On the men's side, Rotich led the Green Wave men's squad, finishing seven seconds ahead of senior teammate and runner-up Moses Aloiloi. Current junior Joshua Cheruyot placed fourth followed by junior Pierce Hill at the no. 32 spot to round out the second-place team effort for the Tulane men.
