Rotich Defends 2017 Title, Wins Men's American Athletic Conference Championship

NEW ORLEANS – Senior Emmanuel Rotich defended his 2017 championship title at home on Thursday, earning a first-place finish in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships.
Torrential downpours for the entirety of the competition were not enough to stop Rotich, finishing just 2.93 seconds ahead of Tulsa's Scott Beattie with a time of 27:06.09 in the 8K race.
The Green Wave men recorded a sixth-place finish among the 10 teams, defeating Memphis, ECU, Houston and USF in Tulane's inaugural hosting of the AAC championship races at The Golf Club at Audubon Park. Tulsa finished in first place for the men's teams, recording an average time of 27:40.61.
Tulane freshman Evans Kipchumba (28:25.47) came out strong, finishing in 15th, while junior Carlos Zervigon (29:46.25) pushed through the rain to earn a top-50 finish in 47th.
Senior Joshua Cheruyot (30:06.45), sophomore Patrick Dougherty (30:32.16), senior Pierce Hill III (30:52.37) and graduate student Tom Coe (31:11.02) maintained a similar pace while crossing the finish line in the same minute, finishing in 53rd, 59th, 64th and 66th, respectively.
Redshirt junior Mckenzie Melius led the women's team, checking in at 28th among 97 participants in the 6K competition with a time of 23:57.99. The women's team beat USF to stand at 11th overall in the championship competition, with Wichita State finishing in first place with an average time of 23:00.02.
Tulane junior Mary Catherine Stovall finished among the top 50 participants, with a time of 25:00.33 putting the junior in 49th place. Sophomore Reid Belanger (26:31.88), sophomore Rachel Maue (27:13.99), junior Paige Fatland (27:49.07) and freshman Nicole Phaneuf (28:03.99) kept a close distance for the majority of the 3.7 miles, coming in 79th, 87th, 94th and 95th, respectively.
The Green Wave are set to compete again in just over two weeks, heading to Texas A&M to race in the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 9.
