NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team will get its first taste of fall action on Saturday as the Green Wave heads to Mobile to take on the South Alabama Jaguars at Stanky Field beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
With nearly a month of training in the books, third-year head coach Travis Jewett and the Wave will participate in the first of two NCAA allowable fall contests beginning with the Jaguars this weekend, before hosting Southern Miss on November 4.
Â
"We're super excited to be able to watch the kids take the training that we've been doing on a day-to-day basis and put it up against outside competition," Jewett said. "It'll give us a chance to have our older players that are more versed, replicate championship behavior to our younger players who are experiencing this level of competition for the first time."
Â
This Tulane team has over 81 percent of its at-bats from a year ago to go along with 80 percent of their total hit output from the 2018 season. Two of the team's top hitters in Trevor Jensen and Jonathon Artigues not only return to the batting order, but also make up a portion of the Green Wave's infield along with returners in Sal Gozzo, Kody Hoese and Acy Owen.
Â
Tulane will also have veteran returners in the outfield with the likes of senior Ty Johnson, senior Tyler Heinrichs and redshirt junior Grant Mathews who is looking to make a move from first base, as well as redshirt sophomore Kobi Owen.
Â
On the mound Tulane returns starting hurlers Kaleb Roper and Keagan Gillies, who combined for 28 starts and over 156 innings pitched between the two. The staff also features Ross Massey, Trent Johnson, and Chase Solesky, who along with Brendan Cellucci and Connor Pellerin, had strong seasons over the summer in various leagues.
Â
South Alabama finished 2018 with a 32-25 record, falling in the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament to eventual champion Coastal Carolina. The Wave and the Jaguars will also meet in the 2019 regular season on May 14.
Â
"We're treating this just like a real contest and that's really what it is," Jewett said. "At the end of the day it doesn't count in season record, but just like I'm sure South Alabama is we're going there to try and win."
