Blue Team Claims Finale, Green Team Claims Series 3-2
Nov 15, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Although the series had already been clinched, the spoils went to the Tulane baseball Blue Team as they closed out the 2018 Angry Wave World Series with a 2-0 victory in the fifth and final game of the fall.
The Green Team won three of the five games, pulling out game one, two and four, while the Blue side earned wins in games three and five.
In a series dominated by big bats and loads of runs, the final game showcased the strength of the Green Wave pitching staff as both sides combined for just four hits, with the Tulane Blue Team having three.
Kaleb Roper earned the start and the victory, pitching 3.2 innings where he struck out six and walked just two without allowing a hit. Justin Campbell and Landon Boeneke combined to preserve the shutout over the next 3.2 innings, with Campbell fanning six and Boeneke striking out one and allowing the one hit.
Keagan Gillies pitched four of the Green Team's seven innings, giving up one run on one hit with four strikeouts. Krishna Raj, Brendan Cellucci and Grant Segar each pitched one inning after Gillies.
Brendan Power went 2-for-3 to lead all players offensively, while Ty Johnson went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored for the Blue squad. Aaron McKeithan had the Green side's only hit going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Johnson doubled to left field to open the bottom of the fourth inning, with Hudson Haskin moving Johnson over to third on a sacrifice. Grant Mathews reached on a fielder's choice to bring in the first run of the game to make it 1-0.
It wasn't until the sixth inning when the other run came in, as Johnson was walked and Haskin was plunked to put two on. A wild pitched moved both runners over, with Mathews grounding out to second to bring in the second run to put the Blue Team up by two.
In the top of the seventh, McKeithan singled to center with one out on the board to get a Green Team runner on base, but that would be the last and only bit of offense for the side as a grounder and strikeout ended the last chance for the opposition to attempt the comeback.
The Green Wave will be back in action in February as they open the 2019 regular season with George Washington at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Â
