NEW ORLEANS – After a long week in San Diego, the Tulane women's basketball team is back in the central time zone and ready for three consecutive games at home. First up for the Green Wave at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse are the FAU Owls. Tulane and FAU will tip off Wednesday at 7 p.m., meeting for just the second time in history.
Â
Wednesday's game falls on Teacher Appreciation Night, and the first 150 fans will receive free Tulane food storage containers.
Â
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane improved to 4-1 on the year with a split weekend in San Diego for Thanksgiving, falling narrowly to then-No. 18 and beating Cleveland State. Tulane last got off to a 4-1 start in 2016-17.
- Krystal Freeman continues to shine for Tulane this year and scored 38 points in two games in San Diego. The sophomore got her first career double-double on Saturday against Cleveland State with 22 points and 11 rebounds – both career highs – and was named to the AAC Honor Roll.
- Tulane freshmen and sophomores have combined for 69 percent of Green Wave scoring, 66 percent of Tulane minutes and 73 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 57 percent of the team rebounding.
- Sierra Cheatham finished Saturday's game against Cleveland State with 15 points and is the second-leading scorer on Tulane's roster. She is scoring 12.0 points per game this year after averaging just 5.0 as a freshman.
- Wednesday will mark the second all-time meeting between Tulane and FAU. Tulane is 1-0 lifetime against the Owls, winning the only meeting in 2014.
- Tulane and FAU have squared off just once in their history. That one meeting came on February 12, 2014, during the one year when Tulane and FAU were league foes in Conference USA.
- Tulane won that game by a 74-62 score with Danielle Blagg and Tiffany Dale each scoring 17 points.
- Wednesday's game will be the teams' first-ever meeting in New Orleans.
- The Owls, based out of Bacon Raton, Florida, hold a 2-4 record so far this season after defeating Richmond and Lafayette College. FAU has dropped contests against Hampton, Georgia State, Little Rock and Bradley.
- The Owls are averaging 57.7 points per game but allowing 65.3.
- Myka Johnson Matthews is the team's top scorer so far this year with 12.0 points per game and is the only Owl in double digits.
- Abby Voss has been dominant on the boards with 9.3 rebounds per game, and Jayla Adams has a team-high 18 assists.
- Tyana Robinson has been the team's most accurate shooter from downtown, draining 9 of 21 attempts from the 3-point line.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
Â
STOCKTON NEARS 500
Entering Wednesday's game against FAU, Coach Lisa Stockton has amassed 497 career victories at Tulane. She is just three wins shy of 500. Stockton has more than nine times as many wins as the second-winningest coach in program history.
Â
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement so far in 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 69 percent of Green Wave scoring, 66 percent of Tulane minutes and 73 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 57 percent of the team rebounding.
Â
IT'S AN HONOR FOR FREEMAN
Following her 38-point week against Cal and Cleveland State, sophomore Krystal Freeman earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the first time in her career. Freeman dropped 16 points against the No. 18 Bears on Friday and followed that up with a 22-point performance and 11 rebounds in a win over Cleveland State. Freeman is leading Tulane with 14.4 points per game this year and her double-double against the Vikings was the first of her career.
Â
A COMEBACK TO REMEMBER
Trailing by 15 points in the third quarter against Cleveland State on Saturday, the Green Wave came back in a big way for the victory. Tulane used a 19-2 run in the third quarter to go from trailing by 15 to leading by two in a span of just seven minutes. Tulane would eventually go on another run of 10-0 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Vikings by 9.
Â
JONES ON FIRE
Freshman Dynah Jones had the greatest game of her young career on Friday against No. 18 Cal, exploding for 22 points off the bench in just 22 minutes. Jones drained four of her five attempts from the 3-point line and went 9 of 16 overall. Jones' 22 points ties a single-game season high for the Green Wave in 2018-19.
Â
CHEATHAM SINKING BUCKETS
With three games scoring in double figures this year, sophomore Sierra Cheatham is second on the team only to Krystal Freeman and her four double-digit games. After scoring 22 against Washington on November 18, Cheatham had her third double-digit scoring game of the year against Cleveland State. Cheatham posted 15 points against the Vikings including three made 3-pointers. She is now second on the roster with 12 points per game, and her six steals against Cleveland State were also a career high.
One game after failing to score against LSU, sophomore Sierra Cheatham went off against Washington for a career-high 22 points on November 18. Cheatham's career night came thanks to a flawless 5-of-5 performance from the field in the second half including a 3-of-3 effort from the 3-point line. Cheatham was Tulane's first 20-point scorer this year and set career highs with eight made field goals and six rebounds.
BENCH CONTRIBUTIONS
Through five games this year, the Green Wave bench has been a huge part of the offense. Green Wave bench players have combined for 24.6 points per game in 2018-19, and Tulane opponents have averaged just 7.4 points per game off the bench.
Â
GUTIERREZ NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Following a week that saw her contribute all over the court in two Tulane victories, Erin Gutierrez was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on November 19. Gutierrez combined for 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals in Tulane wins over LSU and Washington last week. She is Tulane's first conference Freshman of the Week since current senior Meredith Schulte claimed the honor on Jan. 11, 2016.
Â
POWER FIVE VICTORIES
With its wins over LSU and Washington to begin the season, the Green Wave were one of just two teams in The American to defeated two Power 5 teams so far this season as of last week. The others were UConn (Ohio State, Vanderbilt) and USF (Ohio State, Oklahoma). Tulane last won two consecutive games against Power 5 competition on Dec. 17 and Dec. 22, 2016 when it beat North Carolina State and Auburn.
Â
MANU FROM DEEP
Kayla Manuirirangi scored 11 points in the first half against Washington on November 18 including three made 3-pointers. Tulane's top returning scorer entering the year after averaging 7.7 points per game, she has now made 12 3-pointers through five games and is shooting 12 of 31 from downtown.
