Â
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane moved to 5-1 on the season thanks to a total team victory over FAU by an 88-45 score. Tulane's win was its first by 40 or more points since 2015, and the team is currently receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
- The Green Wave have five double-digit scorers on Wednesday including 19 points by freshman Dynah Jones and 15 from sophomore Sierra Cheatham. Ten different players put up points in the blowout win.
- Krystal Freeman continues to shine for Tulane this year and leads the team with 14.5 points per game. She was named to the AAC Honor Roll for her 38-point, 17-rebound effort in San Diego last week.
- Tulane freshmen and sophomores have combined for 68 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 72 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
- Saturday's matchup will be the 67th all-time between Tulane and Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles won when the teams met last year and lead the all-time series 36-30.
- Tulane's series with Southern Miss is one of its longest in program history. The Golden Eagles hold a 36-30 edge in the all-time series as the teams faced each other at least once every year between 1980 and 2014.
- The teams did not meet in 2015, the first time since 1979 that Tulane did not take on Southern Miss.
- Last year, Tulane led by as many as 11 early in Hattiesburg, but the Golden Eagles came from behind for the 66-58 victory.
- The Golden Eagles, based out of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, hold a 5-2 record so far this season.
- Southern Miss has earned wins over William Carey, Grambling State, Samford, Mississippi Valley State and Northwestern State but has lost to South Alabama and Sam Houston State.
- Southern Miss has three players in double-figure scoring this year with Megan Brown and her 12.4 points per game leading the way. Shonte Hailes and Alarie Mayze each have 11.0 points per game.
- On the glass, Kelsey Jones tops the team with 5.7 rebounds per game, and Brown and Mayze are close behind with 5.6 and 5.4, respectively.
- The Golden Eagles are fifth in the nation in rebounding margin, averaging 16.5 boards per game more than their opponents.
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
Â
STOCKTON NEARS 500
Entering Saturday's game against FAU, Coach Lisa Stockton has amassed 498 career victories at Tulane. She is just two wins shy of 500. Stockton has more than nine times as many wins as the second-winningest coach in program history.
Â
RECEIVING A VOTE
Tulane is in the receiving votes category of the USA Today Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week, picking up a single vote to earn its place in the poll once again. Tulane is in the receiving votes category for consecutive weeks for the first time since Jan. 30-Feb. 6, 2017.
Â
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement so far in 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 68 percent of Green Wave scoring, 64 percent of Tulane minutes and 72 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 54 percent of the team rebounding.
Â
PAINT POINT PROWESS
Tulane dominated in every facet of the game against FAU on Wednesday, but perhaps the most impressive stat was the team's points in the paint total. Tulane racked up 50 points in the paint, a number it had not reached since defeated McNeese State on Nov. 30, 2016 – a span of 65 games. Tulane had 20 points in the paint in the first quarter alone out of its 28 total points in the period.
Â
FIVE IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Tulane got its scoring from all over the court, as every dressed player on the roster saw game action and 10 different players scored. But five different Green Wave student-athletes reached double-figure scoring: Dynah Jones (19), Krystal Freeman (15), Harlyn Wyatt (12), Kayla Manuirirangi (10) and Kaila Anderson (10). Wyatt and Anderson were a combined perfect 9 of 9 from the field.
Â
SHUTTING DOWN THE OWLS
Tulane had its way with FAU on Wednesday, earning an 88-45 victory. The win was Tulane's first of 40 or more points since Nov. 17, 2015 in a 92-49 victory over Jackson State.
Â
POINTS OFF TURNOVERS
The Green Wave forced the Owls into 24 turnovers on Wednesday, and Tulane capitalized on those turnovers for easy buckets. Tulane put up 33 points off turnovers in the game, its highest total of the young season. Tulane is averaging 17.2 points per game off turnovers, four more than its opponents' 13.0 average.
Â
DEFENSE DOES IT
The Green Wave defense has been remarkable through six games this season, giving up fewer than 60 points per game four times. Tulane allowed 56, 54 and 51 points in its first three games, and the team topped that by giving up just 45 to FAU on Wednesday. Tulane opponents' .252 shooting percentage from the 3-point line ranks 52nd in the nation.
Â
BENCH CONTRIBUTIONS
Through six games this year, the Green Wave bench has been a huge part of the offense. Green Wave bench players have combined for 25.7 points per game in 2018-19, and Tulane opponents have averaged just 12.3 points per game off the bench.
Â
IT'S AN HONOR FOR FREEMAN
Following her 38-point week against Cal and Cleveland State, sophomore Krystal Freeman earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the first time in her career on Monday. Freeman dropped 16 points against the No. 18 Bears on November 23 and followed that up with a 22-point performance and 11 rebounds in a win over Cleveland State on November 24. Freeman is leading Tulane with 14.5 points per game this year and her double-double against the Vikings was the first of her career.
Â
