Green Wave Knock off Texas State in Overtime
Dec 22, 2018 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Texas State scored the first two points of overtime.
After that, the Green Wave took over.
Tulane women's basketball used a 9-0 run in the overtime period to pick up a 67-61 victory over Texas State in the consolation game of the Tulane Classic at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
A back-and-forth regulation period saw Tulane (8-3) overcome a late 51-45 deficit by scoring 9 of the last 12 points to force overtime at 54-54. In that extra period, the home team asserted itself.
Following a Texas State (4-7) layup to start things off, Tulane got a jumper from senior Harlyn Wyatt to tie things up again at 56-56. On Texas State's ensuing possession, Sierra Cheatham jumped a passing lane for a steal, then drove the length of the floor for a layup while getting fouled. She hit the free throw, and Tulane had a 59-56 lead.
Kaila Anderson made a free throw on Tulane's next possession, and, following a Bobcats offensive foul taken by Wyatt, Anderson hit a spectacular stepback 3-pointer to increase the Green Wave's lead to 63-56 with 1:56 remaining.
The Bobcats made a 3-pointer and a layup in the final minutes, but free throws from Anderson, Erin Gutierrez and Dynah Jones iced the win for Tulane.
The overtime game was Tulane's first since January 6 when it lost to Houston. The Green Wave won an overtime contest for the first time since Jan. 26, 2017, at Cincinnati, and the win was Tulane's first overtime win at home since Jan. 18, 2014 against Southern Miss.
Wyatt finished the game with her first double-double in a calendar year, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cheatham was the team's leading scorer with 18 points including three made 3-pointers, and she had seven rebounds as well. Krystal Freeman was also in double-figure scoring with 10 and had six boards.
Cheatham was named to the All-Tournament Team following her performance Saturday.
Anderson led Tulane with four assists and grabbed a season-best six rebounds. Tulane outscored Texas State 32-20 in the paint and had 13 points off the bench to the Bobcats' 3.
Texas State scored the game's first 6 points, but Tulane responded quickly with a 17-2 run to close out the first quarter and take a 17-8 lead into the second and appeared to be cruising.
In the second period, though, the Bobcats quickly chipped away at that 9-point lead by scoring 7 of the quarter's first 10 points. A Tatyana Lofton and-1 layup followed for Tulane, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Toshua Leavitt brought the Bobcats within 2 points. Texas State never overtook Tulane in the second quarter, but it was right on Tulane's heels as the Green Wave went into the break with a narrow 30-26 lead.
Texas State did retake the lead in the third quarter, starting things on a 7-2 run before the media timeout. A Bailey Holle 3-pointer late gave Texas State a 6-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
In that final period of regulation, Tulane got the first six points in a row to tie the game at 43-43, but an 8-2 Texas State run put the Bobcats back up 51-45. That wasn't enough breathing room for Texas State, who saw their lead evaporate in the last three minutes thanks to two Freeman layups, a Cheatham 3-pointer and two free throws from Wyatt.
Saint Mary's defeated Old Dominion 83-65 in the tournament's championship game.
Tulane is now off for a week but will return to action on December 29 in Coral Gables, Florida, where it will face Central Michigan on the campus of the University of Miami. Tipoff against the Chippewas is schedule for 11 a.m. central.
