NEW ORLEANS – It's down to sunny South Florida for the Green Wave women's basketball team this weekend as they will take part in the Miami Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Florida, the home of the University of Miami.
Â
Tulane will first face Central Michigan at the WATSCO Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. central before taking on Florida A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
STARTING FIVE
- Tulane split its games at the Tulane Classic last week, falling in the opener against Old Dominion before defeating Texas State in the consolation game. The Green Wave's 8-3 record at this point last year is two games better than its 6-5 record through 11 games in 2017-18.
- Coach Lisa Stockton hit a major milestone on December 4 against Nicholls, winning her 500th game with the Green Wave. Now in her 25th year leading Tulane, Stockton is averaging just over 20 wins per season.
- Senior Harlyn Wyatt had her best game of the season against Texas State, putting up a double-double for the first time in a calendar year. She had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the overtime win.
- Tulane's victory in overtime against Texas State was its first overtime win since January 2017 and its first overtime home win since January 2014.
- Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 69 percent of Green Wave scoring, 65 percent of Tulane minutes and 74 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 57 percent of the team rebounding.
SERIES HISTORY – CENTRAL MICHIGAN
- Tulane and Central Michigan have never faced off before Saturday.
- The Green Wave and Chippewas were in the same tournament in the Bahamas last year, but Tulane lost its first-round game and Central Michigan won, meaning the teams did not have to face one another.
- Against current members of the Mid-American Conference, Tulane is a perfect 10-0 in its history. The Green Wave are 1-0 against Ball State, 1-0 against Buffalo, 2-0 against Eastern Michigan, 1-0 against Kent State, 2-0 against Miami (Ohio), 1-0 against Northern Illinois, 1-0 against Toledo and 1-0 against Western Michigan.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS
- The Chippewas, based out of Mount Pleasant, Michigan, have an 8-2 record so far this season and an RPI of 62. Their only losses have come at the hands of No. 3 Louisville and South Dakota State.
- Central Michigan is receiving one vote in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.
- Last season, Central Michigan was an impressive 30-5, winning the MAC and reaching the NCAA's Sweet 16 after knocking off No. 6 LSU and No. 3 Ohio State in the first two rounds of the tournament.
- This year's CMU squad is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the nation, currently ranking seventh in the country with a 3-point percentage of .414.
- Presley Hudson has the hot hand for the Chippewas, scoring 22.3 points per game and draining 3.9 3-pointers per contest. Reyna Frost (16.6) and Micaela Kelly (14.3) are also averaging double-figure scoring.
SERIES HISTORY – FLORIDA A&M
- Tulane and Florida A&M have never met before Sunday.
- Against current teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Tulane holds a 1-1 record all-time. The only MEAC team Tulane has ever played is Howard. Tulane lost to Howard in 2004 but won against the Bison the following year.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
- The Rattlers, based out of Tallahassee, Florida, are 2-8 so far this season with their wins coming against Miami (Ohio) in Tallahassee two weeks ago and NAIA school Edward Waters. FAMU has an RPI of 337 out of 351 as of December 23.
- FAMU has lost games this year against Jacksonville State, North Florida, Tennessee, FIU, Omaha, Florida, Stetson and Western Michigan.
- The Rattlers finished 4-12 in the MEAC last season and 8-24 overall.
A QUARTER CENTURY WITH COACH
Now in her 25th year with the Green Wave women's basketball program in 2018-19, it's hard to imagine anyone else at the helm besides Coach Lisa Stockton. Her numbers are staggering: three different conferences, four conference tournament championships, two conference regular-season championships, six All-Americans, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, seven WNIT spots and a boatload of wins. No one in the history of Tulane women's basketball is even close to Stockton's career numbers.
Â
STOCKTON GETS 500
With a victory over Nicholls on December 4, Coach Lisa Stockton recorded her 500th victory at Tulane. In her 25 years with the Green Wave, Stockton is averaging 20 wins per season – and rising. She is currently the nation's 10th-longest tenured coach at a D1 school. She has more than eight times as many wins as the second-place coach in program history (Joline Matsunami, 1985-90, 60 wins).
Â
UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
Tulane's roster is seeing a youth movement so far in 2018-19 with underclassmen getting a supermajority of minutes played, points scored and assists. Freshmen and sophomores have combined for 68 percent of Green Wave scoring, 65 percent of Tulane minutes and 75 percent of Tulane's assists. Tulane's underclassmen have also contributed 55 percent of the team rebounding.
Â
BIG RUN
Tulane forced overtime against Texas State after coming back from a 6-point deficit with three minutes to play. Early in the extra period, the Green Wave went on a 9-0 run to put the game out of the Bobcats' reach. Baskets from Harlyn Wyatt, Sierra Cheatham and Kaila Anderson contributed to the big momentum swing that sealed the game for the home team.
Â
WYATT'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Senior Harlyn Wyatt had her best game of the season on December 23 against Texas State, putting up 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for her first double-double since Dec. 5, 2017, against UNO. Wyatt shot 5 of 9 from the floor against Texas State and also had two assists. She had two clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter to put Tulane ahead, made a jumper in overtime and then took a crucial charge that helped Tulane extend its run to win.
Â
CHEATHAM GETTING IT DONE
Sierra Cheatham had a heroic day in Tulane's overtime victory over Texas State on December 23, picking up a team-high 18 points. Cheatham was a constant presence on the court, playing a career-high 41 minutes and hitting clutch 3-pointers to force overtime. In the extra period, she had a crucial steal-and-score sequence that was part of Tulane's 9-0 run, and she posted a career-best seven rebounds. Cheatham was named to the Tulane Classic All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
OVERTIME VICTORY
The Green Wave are not frequent participants of overtime games, having playing just four overtime games in the last six years before the December 23 win over Texas State. The overtime game was Tulane's first since Jan. 6, 2018, when it lost to Houston. The win was Tulane's first overtime victory since Jan. 26, 2017, at Cincinnati, and the win was Tulane's first overtime win at home since Jan. 18, 2014 against Southern Miss.
Â
LOFTON GETS THE START
Senior Tatyana Lofton got her first start of the season against Texas State, replacing Kayla Manuirirangi in the starting lineup for the Green Wave's first lineup change in seven contests. Lofton played 19 minutes, scoring 6 points and adding two rebounds.
Â
HOLDING THE LEAD
Tulane has done a tremendous job this season of getting out front and staying there. The team is a perfect 7-0 when it leads games with five minutes left, 6-0 when it leads after the third quarter, 6-0 when it leads at halftime and 5-0 when it leads after the first quarter.
CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
During the Tulane Classic:
- Erin Gutierrez scored her 50th career point.
