NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball fell to No. 16 Southern Miss, 12-3, Wednesday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave (8-10) went scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when it plated three runs on a bases-loaded walk, and RBI single by sophomore third baseman Kody Hoese and a passed ball. The Golden Eagles (12-4) used big innings with four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth inning. USM starter Walker Powell (1-1) earned the win while Tulane starter Chase Solesky (1-1) took the loss.
"We came out here today and reverted back, but we're trying to go forward here," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "We're showing some flashes, but it has to get consistent. Right now, we're up and we're down, and we have to try to find a way to level that off a little bit more."
The Green Wave loaded the bases on three walks in the eighth inning, then with two outs, junior outfielder Tyler Heinrichs drew a walk to score sophomore pinch hitter Alex Galy, Hoese singled home freshman catcher Frankie Niemann and sophomore pinch hitter Grant Mathews raced home on a passed ball to make the score 12-3.
Prior to the eighth inning, Tulane tallied singles by sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues, junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon, freshman left fielder David Bedgood and sophomore first baseman Luke Glancy, but did not get past first base. Bedgood drew a walk in the eighth inning and stole second, reaching second in the home half for the first time in the game.
Southern Miss scored a run in the second inning on an RBI double by outfielder Mason Irby, then scored four runs in the third inning, including a two-run home run by outfielder Matt Wallner. The Golden Eagles then added six runs in the fourth on three bases-loaded walks and two RBI singles. USM added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by catcher Cole Donaldson.
Tulane is on the road this weekend at Long Beach, Calif., where it will play a three-game series against Long Beach State. Game times are 8 p.m. CT Friday, 4 p.m. CT Saturday and 1:30 p.m. CT Sunday.
