Tulane Blows Out East Tennessee State, 21-7
Apr 21, 2018 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – After being held to just one run in the series opener on Friday night, the Tulane University baseball team exploded for a season-high 21 runs on 20 hits in game one of its day-night doubleheader with East Tennessee State to even the three-game set at one game apiece.
Tulane's 21 runs were the most by the Green Wave since 2005 when the team plated 24 against Marist.
Sophomore Jonathon Artigues, sophomore Kody Hoese, senior Matt Rowland, freshman David Bedgood and junior Tyler Heinrich all drove in three runs for the Green Wave.
In addition, Artigues collected a game-high four hits. His four hits also tied a season high.
As a team, Tulane finished with seven doubles, two home runs and one triple. Three of Tulane's doubles came off the bat of junior Grant Witherspoon, as he totaled a career-high three doubles.
Following a scoreless first inning, Tulane jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to RBI hits from juniors Acy Owen and Tyler Heinrichs. ETSU immediately responded in the top half of the third with three runs on three hits to even the score at three apiece.
The Green Wave quickly regained their three-run in the bottom half of the frame, as they plated three runs on five hits. Junior Trevor Jenson highlighted the frame for Tulane as he drilled his second home run of the season to centerfield.
Moving into the top half of the fourth, Tulane starter Keagan Gillies settled in and held ETSU scoreless over the next three innings and limited the Buccaneers to just one hit en route to earn his fourth win on the year.
Gillies finished the game by going 6.0 innings, scattered five hits and allowed just three earned runs.
Offensively, Tulane would break the game wide open, as it scored seven runs over the course of innings fourth, five and six innings to take a commanding 14-3 lead.
ETSU fought back in the top half of the seventh inning with four runs, but Tulane extinguished any chance of a rally, as it scored seven runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
The Green Wave are now 5-2 on the nine-game homestand that continues this weekend against East Tennessee State at Turchin Stadium.
