NEW ORLEANS - With the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships quickly approaching, Tulane track and field's regular season rolls on this weekend, as the team travels to Berkeley, California, for the Brutus Hamilton Challenge. The two-day competition starts at 1 p.m. Friday and wraps up Saturday evening.
QUOTE
"It's a new meet for us. It's one we've never been to before, but I'm excited to see our team compete just two weeks out from The American Outdoor Championships. Being in a scored format is good for our team to get used to that going into the conference championships. It will help our team not just think about their individual performances but how that performance impacts the team on a broad scale. We're very pleased to accept the invitation and excited about the competition." -Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Peterson
ABOUT THE MEET
Tulane's preparations for the championship season continue at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge this weekend, with the men's team competing in 11 events and the women's team participating in 19 events.
The competition opens Friday with the hammer and javelin events, beginning at 1 p.m. The running events will begin at 5 p.m. with the 3000m steeplechase followed by the 5000m and 10,000m races.
Saturday's competition starts at 12 p.m. with competitions in four field events. Action on the track starts at 3:30 p.m., beginning with the 4x100m relay.
"It's an opportunity for our team to be challenged in a scoring environment, and there aren't many meets around the country this time of year that do that," Peterson said. "It's a really good national-level meet, and I think our team needs that kind of test."
The Green Wave's athletes will compete in events all across the track and field, including the men's and women's 100m dash, men's and women's 200m dash, men's and women's 400m dash, women's 800m run, women's 1500m run, men's one mile run, men's and women's 5000m run, men's and women's 3000m steeplechase, women's 100m hurdles, men's and women's 400m hurdles, men's 4x100m relay, men's and women's 4x400m relay, women's long jump, women's high jump, women's triple jump, women's hammer throw, men's and women's discus throw, men's and women's javelin throw, women's shot put and women's pole vault.
Tulane will compete against a slew of athletes from host Cal, Stanford, San Francisco and numerous unattached runners.
"We're going to push the team," Peterson said. "It's two weeks before the conference championship begins, so we're going to have our athletes competing in all of their primary events. They'll be tested in a really challenging scoring environment. It's time to peak, it's time for us to get ready for the championship phase of our season. It's all-hands-on-deck, and the kids are going to perform in all of the events that they're best in."
COMING IN HOT
Juniors Mckenzie Melius and Jessica Duckett rewrote the history book last weekend, as each set new school records in the women's 3000m steeplechase and women's 100m hurdles, respectively. Melius and junior Emmanuel Rotich were in Torrance, California, for the Mt. SAC Relays while Duckett and the rest of the squad competed in the LSU Alumni Gold.
Melius finished ninth in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:34.20 at the Mt. SAC Relays, breaking her previous personal record and school record of 10:41.08, which she set at the Penn Relays (2017). Rotich shone at the Mt. SAC Relays, too, making his season debut in the 3000m steeplechase and finishing third with a time of 8:45.59.
Back in Louisiana at LSU Alumni Gold, Duckett finished fifth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.23 (+1.7 m/s) to set a new school record in the event. Duckett's performance turned heads, and she was named American Athletic Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week for her effort.
She sprinted to the top of The American's performance list in two events - the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles - and her 100m hurdles time ranks No. 30 in the nation and leads the conference by .22 seconds this year.
She also competed in the 400m hurdles, coming in second with a time of 58.08 seconds to improve to ranking No. 19 in the NCAA this year.
