Apr 29, 2018 | Baseball
STORRS, Conn. – Tulane baseball dropped its American Athletic Conference series finale at No. 20 UConn, 9-2, Sunday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
Â
Chilly and rainy conditions greeted the teams Sunday morning for the 11 a.m. ET first pitch, and the game was delayed 40 minutes in the bottom of the third inning by a rain delay with the Huskies leading 4-1.
Â
The Green Wave (21-24, 7-8 American) scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Jonathon Artigues. The Huskies (25-13-1, 9-6 American) took the lead with a run in the first and three in the second. The score held at 4-1 through the rain delay until the sixth when UConn plated two runs, then added one in the seventh and two in the eighth to claim the series.
Â
Artigues and sophomore shortstop Sal Gozzo drove in runs for Tulane, and junior first baseman Trevor Jensen finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Josh Bates (2-1) took the loss while Jeff Kersten (2-1) earned the win for UConn.
Â
Tulane jumped on the board in the top of the first when junior center fielder Grant Witherspoon laced a one-out double inside the right field line and scored on a base hit to left by Artigues. The Green Wave was held scoreless until the seventh inning when sophomore third baseman Kody Hoese was hit by a pitch, Jensen doubled, and Gozzo plated Hoese with an RBI groundout.
Â
UConn tied the game in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, then scored three runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead on a solo home run by first baseman Chris Winkel, a throwing error on a stolen base and a fielder's choice. In the sixth, an RBI single by shortstop Anthony Prato and a sacrifice fly made it 6-1. A walk plated a run in the seventh and a solo home run by Feldstein and an RBI single by second baseman Michael Woodworth in the eighth made the score 9-2.
Â
Tulane plays a midweek contest at Southern Miss at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hattiesburg, Miss., before returning home for a three-game series against ECU next weekend.
