NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane sailing program completed its first home meet since resurrecting the program, placing fourth out of six teams at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta over the course of two days on Lake Pontchartrain.
Â
The Green Wave totaled 488 points, finishing ahead of Georgia Tech and 397 and North Carolina State who tied with 781 points, respectively. Stanford won the regatta with 254 points, followed by Jacksonville with 358 and USF with 416.
Â
"This weekend was really great, it was really successful," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We were able to get the full 18 races in and the competition was top-notch. I have to give a big shout out to the Sugar Bowl Committee and Southern Yacht Club for hosting a great event for us."
Â
After completing nine events on Saturday, Tulane got the day started with its most impressive race of the weekend, as senior skipper Harris Cram and freshman crew Bamboo Trinh claimed the Wave's first victory in the 10th frame of competition in Boat C, while junior skipper Connor Mcavoy and sophomore crew Kate Lenhard crossed the finish line sixth overall in Boat B. The Green Wave compiled 21 points in the race for a combined second-place showing.
Â
"That was a little crazy actually because Harris and Bamboo were subbed in this morning and that was their first race in the regatta," Higgins said. "They came right out and won that race handily. They did a great job of doing their pre-race prep and had a great start, great speed and dominated around the course."
Â
Subsequently, in race No. 11, Tulane turned in its second performance of the regatta where all three boats placed inside the top 10, with Boat A, led by freshman skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and senior crew Grace Bloomfield, in seventh, B in eighth and C in ninth.
Â
Rodriguez-Horan and Bloomfield would highlight the remainder of the afternoon for the Wave with a third-place finish in race No. 12, before recording a trio of fifth-place showings and one sixth-place tally during the final four runs of competition.
Â
Tulane's A-Boat finished sixth out of 18 duos overall with 122 points, while the B-Boat closed out in 10th place with 167 and the C-Boat listing 13th at 199.
Â
The Green Wave return to the water Sept. 29-30 to compete at the Women's Showcase Semifinals in St. Mary's City, Md.
