2018 Women's Showcase Semifinals Results
ST. MARY's, Maryland – The Tulane sailing team earned its first single race win on day two of the Women's Showcase Semifinals, finishing at No. 14 of 17 in the inter-conference regatta.
"It was another tough day but a good one for the ladies," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The light wind conditions from yesterday continued to plague the event and we were fortunate enough to have gotten nine races in each of the A and B Divisions."
The Green Wave tallied 199 points in the regatta, with the Division A team adding 69 and the Division B team posting 130 in their respective nine races. Tulane finished ahead of Christopher Newport University, Eckerd College and the University of Wisconsin.
Freshman Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and senior Grace Bloomfield partnered to sail the Division A races, recording an eighth place finish to beat Tufts, Stanford, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Christopher Newport, Fordham University, University of Vermont, Eckerd, Bowdoin College and Wisconsin.
The two earned a team-best first place finish in the second race of the day, while finishing fourth, tenth and eleventh in the remaining three competitions.
"Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] and Grace [Bloomfield] came out on fire this morning with an incredibly strong fourth and first place finish," Higgins said. "Winning races at this level is incredibly difficult and these ladies dominated at a level not often seen from a freshman skipper."
Sophomore Alanna Austin handled the skipper position in the B Division races, teaming up with senior crew Sophie Ricker in races five and six and sophomore crew Kate Lenhard in the remaining three of the day, recording a 16th place overall finish to beat out Eckerd College.
"Alanna [Austin], sailing with Kate [Lenhard] posted their best race as well with a seventh place finish," Higgins said. "Given that this is their first time competing against this level of competition, the progress shown with top-ten result was also gratifying."
Austin and Lenhard sailed in five races on Sunday, recording a seventh place finish in addition to checking in at No. 17, 15, 14 and 16 to conclude the two-day competition on the water.
"Finishing only a few points outside the top ten certainly has us hungry for what the future has in store."
