Oct 11, 2019 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane sailing team prepares to head back on the water this weekend, with the women's team headed to Navy to compete in the Jen Harris Women's Showcase Finals on Saturday and Sunday.
"The ladies are very excited for this weekend. This event will be the same level as the National Championship later this season, and the competition is going to be top notch," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We've certainly shown we can compete at a high level, but at times have struggled with being consistent. I'm hoping the last two weeks of training will help us in that area. This will be the best 18 teams in the nation, and a solid performance will show just how far this program has come in such a short time."
Skippers Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and Caroline Benson, alongside crews Amelia Schofield, Grace Siwicki, Kara Scully and Lydia Brown, qualified for the Women's Showcase Finals after finishing in ninth among 16 top teams in the semifinal regatta in New London, Connecticut.
The women will race against 17Â teams in this weekend's regatta, including Boston College, Boston University, Brown, Charleston, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern, Stanford, Tufts, Navy, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Yale.
Each school will send one boat to compete in the respective A and B Division races, sailing in 18 total on Saturday and Sunday.
The rest of the Tulane squad will stay in New Orleans and host the Baldwin Wood Regatta on Saturday at Lake Pontchartrain. The Green Wave will send two boats to sail in each of the A and B Divisions, alongside two teams from Texas and one from Baylor, Texas A&M Galveston and New Orleans.
The Green Wave were successful in last season's Baldwin Wood Regatta, taking the first and second-place spots to defeat Texas A&M, Texas A&M Galveston, Texas and Loyola.
